We (myself and my 10 year old daughter) will be heading up the Valley Way Trail on the 10th to spend the night at Mad hut (I have climbed both Madison and Adams numerous times, BUT have NEVER stayed at the hut, or any AMC hut, so this should be an experience!)
Saturday we plan to meet up with Kris (Little Bear), and head up to Mt. Adams to proudly display Old Glory.
Let the weather gods shine on us all…
:flag:
I may be bringing three other people with me. Dan, and two of his cousins – one of whom is flying out here from Vegas for vacation and is interested in joining us for this event.
Frodo – don’t worry, I’ve already informed them that this is a big mountain and that they need to be prepared for weather. (Mike – who is from Vegas – hikes up Mt. Charleston regularly, so he is used to big mountains.)
Frodo and Little Bear:
I’ll keep an eye towards Adams this year from Wildcat D, I’m assuming you’ll be flying that same big flag from last year on Jefferson??? I think I should be able to spot it, and I’ll have some pictures, too. Frodo: have fun staying at the hut, I’m sure you’ll have a blast. :flag:
Hello Dirt,
Yes, we will be flying the same 96 square foot flag from the past 2 events (along with the original flag pole from the Liberty hike 3 years ago). Just hope it’s not too windy otherwise the whole thing might end up landing in the ocean 😮
We will also be looking out for your flag on Wildcat D!
Lets just wish that the weather shines for us all…
Frodo,
Max and I might see you at the hut. We’ll probably stop in for a break before making the push for Madison. Enjoy the hut experience! If you don’t mind the price, it’s a great way to travel light.Smitty
Smitty,
We plan on leaving the hut between 9:30-10:00, so if you and Max arrive before these these times definitely look for us.
As for the Hut, they are quite pricy (and quite loud with snorers from what I hear), but they are also a great way for a 10 year old to climb a peak like Adams and still be able to enjoy it…

Myself and my 10 year old daughter Shannon hiked up the Valley Way on the evening of the 10th, to spend the night at the Madison Hut. We arrived around 8:30pm, to a full capacity hut (we were the last to arrive). After we established our bunks, we ate, played chess (she beat me), and socialized with some of the many people staying at the hut this night, including Mohammed Ellozy.
On the morning of the 11th, I was up at 6:30am, but Shannon still has Z’s on her mind… It is was a beautiful day, and around 8:30, as we got ready for our climb, we met Laurie Burt (the president of the AMC, who was also staying there). She asked me what we were planning on hiking this day, and I told her all about the Flags on the 48, and that we were representing Mt. Adams. She seemed positive about the event, but did joking state “I won’t notify the Forest Service about what you are doing” 😀
Shannon and I left the hut at 9:40 and start heading up to Adams. Once we approached the Gulfside Trail, we saw Kris (Little Bear) and her husband Dan waiting for us. We join forces and headed up to Adams.
We arrived on the summit at 11:00am and relaxed for a while. At 11:30, we start putting together the flag pole, and at 11:50 we proudly raised Old Glory. There is not much of a breeze, but occasionally it was strong enough to make the flag wave. :flag:
We were accompanied by a few other enthusiastic hikers who were taking pictures, and soon after I hear whistling coming from the west. A few friends of mine now come into view, Post’r Boy, Michelle (Chickety), Sue (Stinkyfeet), Andy, and Swamp Yankee were rising to the summit! What a surprise! They came up via King Ravine and the Great Gully Trail , such an easy route, you slackers 😉
We sat around chatting and looking for other flags. We saw flags on Moriah, Madison, Wildcat D, and Jefferson. Such a beautiful day, and with the best company!
We packed up at 2pm and started heading down. On the Airline trail, we came across a French Canadian hiker who told us that Sept 11th was in the past, and it was time for people to stop bringing it up. Life goes on, he said. Well it is because of ignorant people like him that I will be taking a flag up a mountain every year for as long as I am able. We will never forget!!!!
Shannon and I arrived at the Mooseland at 7pm, and had a blast seeing old faces and some new ones. What a fantastic ending to such a memorable day! :flag:

Frodo,
Not to dis Ms. Burt, I’m sure she knows what she is talking about, I’m also sure she was more kidding than serious. I just remembered that last year when I did Madison, I met a US park ranger at the top. He actually helped me raise the flag, took my picture, shook my hand and thanked me for doing what I was doing. He said that he heard about FOT48 and thought it was a great idea. So, I guess in hind sight, you could have said “they already know…”. Just an FYI.

I’m actually kind of appalled that the President of the AMC didn’t know about the event. I’m not sure if that shows arrogance, ignorance or apathy towards anything outside what’s happening at the AMC. She may be the nicest person in the world, but for cryin’ out loud, this is a major hiking event!
I am not so sure that she didn’t know about it. Infact, she was hiking from Madison Hut to Lakes Hut, which is one of the most scenic hikes to do on Flags on the 48. I just think that she was making conversation and she definitely seemed overall positive about the event.
Personally, I agree with LOMU. I don’t think the WMNF is concerned, especially because we leave no trace. Now if we left our flags there, we would likely be hunted down by angy mobs with torches and pitch forks.
Frodo and team:
I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet at the Mooseland afterwards, we must have left just before your arrival. I spotted your flag and the numerous people on the summit of Adams, and I was surprised to see that ours was spotted (having only a 40 square foot flag). It must have looked like a point of color from your vantage point!
Frodo,
I was pleased to hear that you saw our flag on Wildcat D. Sorry we missed you at the Mooseland – would have liked to press palms. My son, “Dirt”, got me interested in this and it was a great experience for both of us. Thanks for your leadership and inspiration.
