Hey Jeremy, I’m going to try and get in shape to join your croo up there on the 11th. Carrigain turned me away in 2009, it’s time to try again. :flag:

Keep in mind that Route 302 is currently closed to traffic at the washed-out Sawyer River bridge, just east of Sawyer River Road. You will need to approach on Rte 302 from the west, from the Twin Mountain area.

My understanding is that currently traffic is stopped at the Willey Station Road (Ethan Pond trailhead). Hopefully by 9/11 you’ll be able to drive to Sawyer River Road.

That said, Sawyer River Road is currently closed to traffic. You’ll want to keep an eye on the USFS WMNF website’s forest road conditions; it may be necessary to park at the winter parking lot at the head of the road.

Route TBA at this point. It’s unlikely that the original 10 mile round trip route will be possible.

I’m going to venture a guess that there’s a 50/50 chance of this particular hike being cancelled. If we’re not allowed to walk on the closed roads, our shortest options will be in excess of 20 miles RT and will involve unchecked trails with tough water crossings.

Just a thought Jeremy. If Carrigain proves too difficult to access because of road conditions, how about moving to another peak that we normally do not cover.

                Examples:
                Mt. Clay
                Mt. Franklin
                North Lafayette
Adams 4 or 5 or JQ.
                Sandwich Dome

Certainly a thought! Hopefully we can get an update on the road/trail status this week.

I’d just like to get you settled by Friday. I also may need to move both Hancock peaks as well so the sooner you know , the easier it will be to plan around.

I’d like it settled yesterday 🙂

I have an e-mail out to DOT to see if they’ll allow us to walk part of US 302.

If they won’t, then we’ll have to consider cancelling Carrigain, considering adjacent longer approaches from US 302 and 112 are currently inaccessible as well.

What about going in from Zealand Road – Zealand/Ethan Pond/Shoal Pond/Desolation trails?

Here is our plan, weather permitting:

…Start time revised, see subsequent post…

A slightly faster than book time pace should bring us to the peak just before 12 Noon.

Please be prepared for fall Presidential weather – the peak is higher than much of the southern Presidentials and can be bitter cold in foggy conditions. Since we’ll be on the summit for over 2 hours, please be prepared.

This is an aggressive ~15 mile hike. There are no easier options at present.

Any modifications of these plans will be posted here by Friday, Sept. 9 at Noon.

Think of it as Owl’s Head with a much better view.

Very happy to see that you and your gang are going to still try and get the peak.

Comparing any other 4K with Owl’s Head could qualify as slander 🙂

Hey – Owl’s Head is an awewsome summit!!!!

Isn’t the Sawyer River bridge south/east of the parking area for Sawyer River Road or is the map I am looking at wrong?

Might be a good idea for somebody to actually drive down 302 from Crawford Notch and check it out just in case the DOT person was confused on the location. At the intersection of 3 and 302 the sign says it is open for 19 miles, shich would appear to be to the bridge.

Might also be worth checking with the Notchland Inn to see if they might be willing to let you park there and shuttle you the 2 miles to the road.

See this thread where it says you can drive all the way to Sawyer River Road from Twin Mountain.
