We were not deterred by the cold, wind and rain; 29 strong at the trail head. Another remarkable FOT48 Memorial hike. On the trail at 8 AM, 3 challenging brook crossings (high water) along the way. Dave, Brian, Pete then Dick took turns hauling the flag pole backpack to the summit. Some of us had a nice encounter with “Chipmunk” the 15 year old AT thru hiker. Good luck to her. Arrived at the summit in plenty of time to get our flag assembled and flying by noon. Although it was cold windy and wet with no views everyone was in great spirits and we all enjoyed each other’s company. Had a nice invocation by Brian reflecting on the 9/11 victims and the challenges there love one had to endure.
The hike back down the summit got us a little warmer. The group spread out and it was Dave, Bob, Dave, Kevin and Barbara bringing down the flag and poles – unfortunately, Barbara twisted her ankle severely at the second brook crossing (later we found out she also broke a bone in her foot) but we were able to help her get out to the trailhead (slowly but surely). Special thanks to the “Beer Girl” (Laura) who met us on the trail with a bag of ice cold beer. Special thanks to Dave B. and Bob P. who hauled the flag pole backpack all the way down to the trail head.
We had a nice reunion at the trail head – everyone was” hydrating” and socializing. Then we all headed over to Barbara and Brain’s place for a nice barbeque and more “hydrating”. Great time! Thank you!
I want to thank everyone for participating this year – this is truly a great 9/11 memorial event!
See you all at McDonald’s – September 13, 2014. :flag:
