This was our ninth year involved in the event, all as peak coordinator with such peaks as Bond, Eisenhower, Jefferson, Jackson, Hale, Monroe (2), Pierce and now Moosilauke. Every year, because of the weather, is an unknown but we must say that the weather this past Saturday was perfect for the event. We had a very large group so we separated into three groups with the Flag Team moving first and having the flag up by 11:10am. We hiked from the Ravine Lodge and most took Gorge Brook Trail to the summit. As always, we had a moment of silence at noon, followed by our resident bugle player who played taps and then followed a poem called nine-eleven by Charlotte Parsons.
We were met throughout the day by hundreds of hikers who thanked us for our work. We, as always continue to praise the organizers for the work they do as we are just those of many who honor Americans impacted by 9/11 on this special day. Many of our team enjoyed their stay talking with other hikers, eating some snacks, washing them down with some moonshine.
We concluded the day with a beautiful ceremony by the Boy Scouts who left tears in the eyes of many of us.
Thank you all for all the work you do. WE SHALL NEVER FORGET.
