Yay! Visitors from the next peak! I’m sure that we will see each other along the way.

The “getting up” route has been locked in:

Greeley Ponds Trail. 2.5 miles in, 1 mile an hour (slow hike rate), so we should be at the trailhead (kancamagus hwy) at 9:30 ~ 10 am. Heat will slow me down, cool weather will speed things up.

I have a flag and rigging that I used on previous 9/11 hikes. Should work out well.

Weather conditions will dictate how we get back down. To loop, or not to loop….

Sunday is much better for me. I can sleep in on Saturday. Perhaps if the weather is good, I can make it a two day hike. There is one peak out in the middle of nowhere… Owl’s head? I forget. Should make for a good hike. Start in Franconia, and work south. I’ll try anything once. Or whatever peak is left over. I’m easy.

Started out with a respectable group of people for the trip, but they all canceled one by one. I was the “team leader” so I went up alone. Arrived in Franconia at 10 pm Friday night, and started packing. The AMC guide estimated 3.5 hours to the top, a 1.5 hour decrease from my rule of thumb estimate. Much joy was had, as that meant that I could sleep in later (I hate mornings). Finished packing, and went to sleep.

Woke up late, rushed out, and arrived at the trailhead 30 minutes late. It was clear, and cool – so I was able to hustle up the mountain and arrive 10 minutes early. Much more joy was had. Very easy hike; 5 miles one way, but only about 3000 feet in elevation gain. Total cake walk.

Route: Nineteen mile brook trail – Carter dome trail – Zeta Pass / Carter Moriah Trail.

Had three, or four visitors over the next two hours. Most were supportive, and appreciated the effort.

As the temperature rose, the local bug population mobilized. At times it was a haze of bugs at the top. Deet quickly became my best friend. At 2:10, I took the flag down, and left for a leisurely hike out. Lots of water running everywhere. Very pretty, and made up for the lack of views.

More cancellations. We are down to one people.

I guess that 10 mile hike statement is scaring people away.

I shall talk to myself on the way up. I hope that I don’t get started on politics, or religion. I should stick to pleasant subjects, like hiking, gear, computers, cars, women….. The usual happy stuff.

You are correct in your assumption Greg. Thanks for the clarification.

With all the misunderstanding about what we are doing, I just wanted other hikers to be clear about what is going on, and that LNT will be observed. I am just trying to avoid arguments at the top. I heat / sun stroke very easily (I usually hike in late fall/winter/spring) and as such, may not be able to sit on top for two hours to watch / explain the flag.

Thanks for the corrected tense. I’ll bring a copy with me attached to the flag pole.

                    With respect to all;

in reply to: Tough Questions #48700

                        soap box answer:
I simply see the flag as pro-American. I am not ashamed to be an American, and have no problems displaying the flag at any time. I feel that this in no way reflects my opinions on current policy. America is bigger than any government. America is the people. If others see the flag as one of repression, or “pro-war”, or “we are all for W”, then that is their own misconception of what America is about.
No problems here. Fly the flag, live long, and prosper… No wait, wrong channel!
