in reply to: Why does it say 2010 is closed? #54480
Chris, why the Swedish flag?

in reply to: West Bond 2006 #53116Yes, I believe you are probably right. The flags on the Franconia ridge would have been a mostly ‘edge on’ view for us. I had forgotten our binoculars!
Did you get as wet as we did?
Brian
in reply to: Owls Head THE OFFICIAL SUMMIT #53118From West Bond we tried to spot the flag on Owl’s Head (but didn’t have binoculars) having read that there would be an attempt to raise it above the trees. However, we couldn’t make it out which may have been due to the angle. We thought we saw something on Flume and Liberty but we couldn’t see anything on Lafayette or Lincoln.
I see you also had a great adventure with the rain. We got it too while coming down the Twin Brook trail. We were getting seriously hypothermic until we wised up and said time to get some gear on…this rain is not going to stop!
Sounds like quite an adventure.

Yes, I have downloaded quite a few pictures from our trip. I also moved the pictures that somehow got stuck into Bondcliff to the West Bond album. When Danny gets me his pictures, we might add a few more (I wish I had taken a picture of the flooded section of the Franconia Brook trail as we wwaded through it)!

Finally, after so many attempts, we got to do the honors of bearing the flag. Last year I had to travel at the minute and had to give it to someone else, and another time we actually went and the person who was supposed to do it didn’t show…his wife had a baby that night.
Sorry Sherpa John, but those first five pictures that ended up in the Bondcliff gallery should have gone into West Bond. I was downloading them and creating the album at the time of the web site crash (from the power outage I guess) and somehow, someway those five pictures all ended up in your album. At least the subject matter is consistent.
Stephen said he will try to fix it.
Brian
Thank you ‘dirtgirl’. I also need to apologize for a mixup in the Bondcliff gallery. I was downloading pictures to a West Bond album when thepower outage killed this website yesterday afternoon. Those pictures ended up in the Bondcliff album. Don’t know how, but I have contacted the powers that be and they will try to fix it!

We will try to start at Lincoln Woods at 6:30 AM. When we arrive at West Bond we will probably do some cairn building. If all in the crew are feeling good enough we will continue the trip out over South Twin and back down to the Franconia Brook Trail. Right now the weather looks good; If one can trust the 850 mb weather model runs there will be significant warming during the day (from 7.5 to 15 C at the 4500 foot level) Sunday and probably some high cloudiness by the PM. Winds will start to increase by evening. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere near enough moisture to create any orographic cloud. Saturday will be much cooler, low winds, and will likely have super visibility.
Mackreth, my brother in law Danny and I are the only ones going so far. Debbie had family commitments. Anyone else is welcome to join us.
We got a flag; nothing impressive, but its a starter. Hope we can find a nice trunk up high on Bondcliff to lash the pole on.
Brian
Hmmm…I didn’t get notified that there were any responses to my last reply in spite of the fact I requested an email notification.
Well, we can certainly pitch in and help rebuild it. Why did the FS destroy it to begin with? Summit cairns are not exactly ‘destroying’ the natural beauty if that’s what they were hung up about!
And on the other topic, I really don’t have the gear (or the energy to prepare) for an overnight stay!
Brian
in reply to: For those staying at Guyot – West Bond Cairn #51516Why did the forest service demolish the cairn? If so, that will give us something to do! We can try to rebuild the cairn since we are doing this peak on the 11th. At least we can start the job. I’ll just have to remember to bring some work gloves to handle rocks!
Brian
Oopps! Just caught on today that there was such a ‘route planning’ section. Right now there appear to be four of us doing the trip. My son MAckreth, brother in law Danny, and Debbie who we have done some winter excursions with a couple of years ago.
Our plans are to do a day hike. We will start at Licoln woods perhaps about 7:00 or so. Depedning upon the weather we may continue out over S Twin and down the Franconia Brook trail.
Still working on the flag…
Brian
in reply to: Flags of the 48 launch date #48601All for it! We would like to do West Bond as our first choice.
