I have a flag and pole that I put together for 2003 that you can borrow. The pole is made of 2 sections of PVC, 5 feet each, with threaded coupling to connect them. Check pics for Eisenhower 2007, 2005, 2003.

Hello – we tried to visit post-hike last year for a beer, but the campground wanted $10 each just to stop in an say hello. Is that the same this year?

We could see the flag on Jackson from Eisenhower, FWIW

We did Eisenhower in 2003 & 2005, but unfortunately have wedding to go to this year. I have a 10 foot (2×5) PVC pole, with hardware and flag if anyone wants to borrow it. Hope be able to participate in 2007, so will need the gear back.

                hello,

I flagged Eisenhower in 2003, and would love to have a more active role in this year’s event. When recently I saw some of the posts for initial planning the 04 event, I thought I’d post to volunteer my help. Of course I plan on being on top of one of the 48 on 9/11/04, but let me know if I can help out as a peak coordinator, pre-hike-flyer-poster, recruiter, post-hike-party-planner, or wherever needed. Thanks!

                  Hello,

I think I may have been a little unclear in my last post. I think that the8re and Greg and all the folks that put their time and efforts into organizing this event did a fantastic job, and I am grateful that I could be a part of it. When I mentioned “Increased Coordination & Communication” I was referring to a previous suggestion of having peak coordinators who would be able to monitor coverage & communication for an assigned group of peaks. I too agree that cluttering mailboxes is not necessary, but a coordinator might be able to put together a quick back-up plan for any last minute cancels. For example, let’s say Team Eisenhower has to back out a day or two prior. They would let the coordinator know, and he/she might then be able to find potential replacements. Perhaps the team covering a nearby peak could split up in order to cover Ike? Just an idea.

PS – got a card in the mail last week, with some new pictures from a woman I met on the hike, and posted the new pics in the gallery. The pics are pretty good, but the card was even better, thanking me (and really all of us involved) for our efforts in doing this.

I think all the ideas being kicked around are good and will be helpful in getting more people involved and ALL 48 covered on September 11, 2004. From my experience on Flags on the 48 2003, I had a couple of take-aways that some of the ideas presented here should address.

Publicity – many people I met said they loved the idea, wanted to participate next year, would’ve done it this year had they know, etc. Of course, perhaps their feedback was more spur of the moment, but more awareness/publicity will help.

“Target Marketing” – I also met a couple of hikers that had heard about the event on a hike a few weeks earlier, but didn’t know how to find out more or how to sign up. Somebody mentioned business cards on this site but I couldn’t find the thread, so am not sure if I am talking about the same thing. But having something similar to the “mission statement” that could be distributed on the trails to interested hikers prior to the event would work, maybe just a 2004 version of the statement?

Increased Coordination & Communication – I think the idea of having some sort of increased coordination/communication is a great way to manage people that sign up for a peak but need to back out. As I mentioned in a previous post, had I (or others on the peak I flagged) known that an adjacent peak was not going to be flagged due to a last minute cancel, perhaps we would’ve done things a little differently to get ‘em both covered.

Just my feedback, and I am looking forward to next year and taking a more active role in this event.

I think 48 of 48 is a 100% attainable goal. WIth all the great ideas about increasing awareness and ways to get people signed up that were shared in previous posts, I hope that all 48 peaks are “sponsored” well in advance of the hike date. I met at least 5 groups of hikers on the peak I covered that seemed genuinely interested in participating next year.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to handle last-minute cancels or no-shows? From the peak I “flagged” this year, I kept checking the next 4000 footer down the ridge which I knew had been sponsored, looking for the flag. It apparently never got covered, but stuff happens, and this is understandable. I was considering dismantling my flagpole & flag, hoofing it over, and planting it on the other peak for a while, but logistically it would’ve been a problem. Perhaps peak sponsor “neighbors” can communicate re: contingency plans if it makes sense? At least that will be my plan should I get the opportunity to cover the same peak next year.

With the idea of a get-together the night before, I bet we could even find some more adventurous hikers who would cowboy-up for the challenge of hiking whatever peak needed to be covered on flag-day. A game day decision – that way any last minute cancels could be covered. Just a thought.

                        Peak Name: Eisenhower

Short description of rigging and pole system: 2 sections of PVC 5 feet each, with threded coupling @ end to connect. Eyelets and nuts through pre-drilled holes to clip flag to. Pics to follow shortly.

Hello – I need some last minute advice. My plans seem to be unwinding due to circumstance beyond my control, and my group of hikers to raise our flag has dwindled – more like disintigrated. The good news is we have the portable PVC pole with some support points ready to go, and I can scrounge up line and stakes, etc to support the pole. I left the actual flag responsibility up to another person, who had to cancel last minute, and had not gotten a flag. Where can I buy Ole Glory? I stopped by my local Target, and they’ have none. I am in the Boston area, have taken Friday off, and plan on heading up to NH during the day, so any suggestions would be appreciated, the more convenient to 93 the better.
