Hello again to all team members for Lafayette! :flag:
Here is our “Plan”Meet at Old Bridal Path trailhead parking lot 7AM.
We shall divide flag and pole gear.
Depart parking lot at 7:30 and proceed up the Old Bridal Path to summit. We should easily be there by 11:30 latest, then set up and fly by noon. If we are there earlier, then all the better.
Hope to see you all then!
Brownie

Anyone know if these two peaks were officially represented and flown?in reply to: Mt. Pierce (Clinton) – Troop 47 raises the colors #53241Great job completed for your Scout team.
The photo shown with the flag raising and the scouts saluting will be one of my favorite pics of the year!
I think it deserves “Gallery cover” just for the spirit it shows.:flag:Hope to see you again next year.

Lincoln 2004in reply to: Team B&B on Garfield! #53201Thanks Brian for that great trip report! Bill and I were really excited about having a full team to help out this year. Everyone had such a great attitude and support for our cause.
Unsure about our goals for next year, maybe head over to the Presidentials and include a Hut stay.
Hope you and Jen join us again too.Brownie

Correct guy line placement can make the difference to stabilize your freestanding pole setups.
I suggest using the 3 way anchor system as others have done.
4 anchor points w/guy/stays can be better but are far more difficult to balance loads. One important note, imagine the “footprint” of anchor placements as a tyical “Y” where the 3 anchors are located. Try to align the “open” end of the “Y” to face the prevailing wind direction, so that at least 2 anchors can split the loading equally.
If you only have 1 guy/anchor against the wind, then the pole will flog back and forth.
This year I have an advantage to use the Garfield summit foundation, thus I will be using 4 way guys to each corner, not concenred as much with wind direction.
Last year our South Twin setup used a 3 anchor guy system, with paired locations on the pole, which was totally freestanding and worked quite well.Brownie
Team B&B on Garfield will be using a halyard pulley system new this year.
Main reason being the flag is a 8×12, hefty handfull to raise.
Last year we used a 6×10, tied directly to 18’x 1-1/2″ O.D. PVC pole. What happens during flag/pole raising can be difficult if not impossible in a good breeze.
The pole gets bent considerably before you get a chance to stay-line it out secure. Next problem becomes trying to get the pole vertical while flag is under load. So, with those lessons learned I decided to go with a halyard/pulley hoist system.
Benefits being:
1) Can raise the pole without flag loading and then can fine tune the stays.
2) Halyard will help tune pole vertical by acting as a plumb line with a small weight attached.
3) Can raise flag in traditional manner, safely unfurling it and keeping it from touching ground. Many new things to consider when going “big time” sized flags!

Lincoln 2004in reply to: South Carter needs HELP! #53048You should post this over on the other hiking websites as well.
in reply to: Weather predictions for Memorial Hike #52643Checking out the NOAA models, I see a strong “zonal flow” west to east with Canadian cold front dropping, will certainly kick off some decent winds.
I think its too dry to make any rain.
Expect westerly winds with possible 20-30mph at summits, if not stronger.
Makes sure you are prepared to hold your rigs together! :flag:in reply to: Mt Garfield #52967@MichaelJ wrote:
It’s a great mountain for flying a flag. Be sure to check out the gallery, especially 2004, to see the odd setup with the walls from the old fire tower, if you haven’t been there before.
YES, I saw your setup in detail just for that reason.
I have been to Garfield many times before, but forgot just how big the foundation was, so the previous photos were a great reference.
We got one HUGE flag to setup this year!:flag:
in reply to: Weather predictions for Memorial Hike #52639With the onslaught of tropical storm Ernesto this weekend, and the lack of any seroius tropical storms elsewhere on the map, I’ll bet its safe to say we will miss anything like these weekends weather for our Fly Day next week!
I think the only real problem would ever be a tropical storm this time of year, so glad to get it out of the way this weekend.
THINK SUNSHINE! :flag:
