in reply to: Assigning Peaks/Accessible Peaks #49468
This may not be popular, but I was thinking maybe opening registration to previous participants a couple days before others, to offer a little reward for regular contributors (like MichaelJ who is so close to finishing all 48 )? Or even open registration three days early for those who hiked all three years, then two days early for those who hiked two out of three, and one day early for those who did one? Just thinking out loud here…
in reply to: Agenda for get-together #49302Ahhh, wisdom prevails! IMHO, this event has everything to do with partiotism and nationalism, and nothing whatsoever to do with the political system through which we suffer… I mean govern.
😀
in reply to: Planning Meeting Registrations now open! #49395Damn! I have to answer yes to WAAAAAY too many of those…
in reply to: Planning Meeting Registrations now open! #49393I’d like to attend, but with baby and difficult job, I may not be able to. I’ll wait on submitting my registration until I know more. So count me in as a definite maybe…
Oh yeah, and as a native New Jerseyan, we don’t use that silly “What exit?” phrase! That’s a New England invention. Even if we did, no one would know if you mean off the parkway or the turnpike. (We won’t mention why it was necessary to have both in one state)
🙂
in reply to: Member Rankings #49441Man, I’m not sure I would have liked being called a pole! Too many connotations for that one. Nice job changing that up.
JayTrek, I know a little blue pill that can help you with that mast issue…
😮

2002 Zealand (but had to drop out)
2003 Zealand (for real this time)
2004 (possibly Middle Carter?)in reply to: Flags on the 48 Web site Overhaul #49417If you’re looking for layout ideas, I would be happy to contribute some. I like all the ideas posted here, but I’m wonding if you we’re looking for items to include, or overall layout as well.
As an example, I’d like to see small photos related to the hikes and 9/11 aligned down either side of the page, perhaps even faded into one another. Of course I nice header graphic to set the feel of the site. Links to the main areas of the site can stay listed across the header.
More ideas if you need them
in reply to: Member Rankings #49430I agree that rankings are useful to new users of the message boards, but I’m not sure how much. I always sort of thought people liked them (kind of a way to see how much you’ve contributed over time), but I guess not everyone is.
As far as listing an icon for every year someone has participated, I would say we’re requesting Stephen do some serious PHP work, which is a lot to ask from a free board. I do like the idea of eliminating one rank indicator, but I think it should be the icon, rather than the name. Just my $.02
Whereas I am excited about the event, I really enjoy the hike itself the most.
in reply to: Trip Reports #49053It may be a little late, but at least it’s up there. Trip report is here:

:dunce:
in reply to: Domain Name #49087Definitely willing to contribute. Can also recommend decent host, contribute to the web site, if desired.
P.S. Excellent idea
in reply to: Peak count (2003) #49061Peak Name: Mt. Zealand
# of people in party: Four + 2 dogs (Kaia and Bailey)
Short description of rigging and pole system: Four pieces of Aluminum angle iron in three foot sections connected with screws and wingnuts (only 2 lbs!)
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): I agree with promoting this a little earlier, although I think it was about right this year. Probably to get more participation, we need to increase the breadth of promotional activity. Encourage more links from hiking-related sites (there are many) and take advantage of the mentions on radio, newspaper and even TV by contacting the folks who mentioned us this year and asking them to announce the name, website and how to participate.Otherwise, the whole event was excellent. Pics to follow!
in reply to: Day Hiking or Base Camping/Backpacking? #48980Hey y’all, this is the weekend for the big NASCAR event at Loudon. Anyone travelling up 93 today should be prepared for some serious traffic. And Route 4 too. Just a thought.
BTW, we’re camping all weekend at Sugarloaf II, sites 14 and 15 if anyone is looking for a cold beer and a grilled steak . . .
in reply to: Questions: Hiking with "younger" kids #49013Plus my post is no longer an option, since Wildcat D has been taken!
in reply to: Questions: Hiking with "younger" kids #49010Of the peaks that are left, I think the best option might be Wildcat D. While none of the hikes in the Whites are easy, some are particularly tough (such as the Hancocks). The rest of the options are either particularly long, or steep. IMHO.
in reply to: A few more mentions… #49005Once again, the event was mentioned, although not by name, on WHEB and WGIR. Perhaps next year a press release would be warranted including the name of the event, etc?
