Table the issue… good idea.
It is not something that will have an adverse effect on this years hike.
Gives everyone a long time to think about it too.

in reply to: Grandfathered Peaks #50868I am mostly in favour as well. A fine way to honor one’s committment and dedication.
However,I would be concerned about the size of the group,
in time, if it was always the same group just expanding with friends and family,
this could become unintentionally a private party peak,
Just a thought…dirt_girl
in reply to: Updated History Page ?? #50854Good eyes, fine ideas and kind words, Thank you Gentlemen. 😀
Some of the changes have been made.
I kinda like horrific in the first sentence.
A little redundant but a powerful reminder.
Catastrophic sounded to comic bookish.
I kept banded together as opposed to joined together for a similar reason.
The words strike me as more powerful… envoking images.
I could be wrong…it’s happened before. 😳Please keep the ideas coming :flag:

in reply to: Thank You! #50841Absolutely!!! Thank you everyone!! Good ideas and quick work made the 2005 planning weekend happen. It was a fabulous time. Those of you that couldn’t make it… were missed.

The campground was perfect; great price, great bathrooms, easy to find, close to town, not far from so many cool hiking places and what a group that gathered!! The meeting was very productive, SilentCal and MichaelJ took on the enormous responsibility of getting the ideas and information out to us all.The hike up Garfield was great but challenging for me… eight months of sitting on my backside and two feet of snow… 😮
somewhere ahead of me… Jules was grinning. It was a long winter and I was so happy to see some old friends and equally happy to have made new ones!
Vicky fed the entire campground or could have with the vegie goodies she prepared for all of us.
Sonic Boom’s side kick (no trail name yet) simply amazed us with such determination and a good spirited nature!
The CHRIS & CHRIS team rolled in with a two bedroom condo and provided spontanious comedic entertainment along with Pucknuts and Brownie who actually found enough space in their vehicle to stash a cribbage board!
Great people, great place, not so great weather. Jeepers it’s good to be back!!!

dirt_girlin reply to: Updated FOT48 History #50786Thanks MichaelJ. 😀
I made the changes you suggested and also posted a copy of the updated history in the 2005 Planning Meeting forum as alot of people are looking there for current information.
dirt_girlin reply to: Updated FOT48 History #50784The “Flags on the 48” event was established in response to the horrific terrorist attacks that took place in America on September 11, 2001
Three days after the attacks several regular on-line posters, to the AMC Hiker Journal message forum, banded together and planned a hike the following day. Intent on raising the largest American flag they could find from the summit of Mt. Liberty.
On September 15, 2001, six hikers met at the White House Trailhead armed with a 96 square foot flag, 30 feet of PVC tubing, 100 feet of rope, 2 rolls of duct tape, and a wealth of pride and determination. A slight gesture of compassion for such a horrific loss, the American flag was raised on the summit of Mt. Liberty, paying tribute to the thousands of innocent people who perished in the attacks. This patriotic display received such tremendous amounts of positive feedback that a committee was formed to establish a larger, annual memorial. The “Flags on the 48” was given life.
On September 14, 2002 and again on September 13, 2003, several hundred patriotic and compassionate hikers embarked on a collective journey to raise American flags on all 48 of the 4,000+ foot summits in New Hampshire. This tribute, to the sacrifice of life and our strength of unity as a nation, remains small in the scope of the enormity of all that has been lost. What began as a small tribute had gained tremendous support and involvement.
On September 11, 2004, for the first time in the history of the event, all 48 of the 4000+ summits hosted Old Glory! She was carried to the peaks by dedicated bands of hikers wishing to pay their respects to the all the families and communities that grieve the ultimate and tragic loss of innocent lives. We haven’t forgotten the men and women who have unselfishly served and sacrificed to preserve our liberty. An American flag was unfurled from every mountain top with pride, compassion and humble gratitude.
From every mountain top, let freedom ring.in reply to: Hiking events #50733As I see it there are two seasons… winter and hiking season. So it seems the hiking
(camping, hanging out ’round the fire, good conversation with lively people) season has begun 😀 Woo Hoo!!!! It’s been such a long winter, I’m thrilled my first outdoor adventure
of the season involves sharing company with so many very groovy (yes MichaelJ 😉 I mean you too) people!!!
I cast my vote for Cannon Balls as well but would also like to bag a 4K or two… Mooseilauke perhaps… both Kinsmans maybe???? 😮
I’m easy… I will hike any mountain… any time… with just about anybody.
Glad to see you joining in the fun Alpinista…however you can’t lead unless you’ve finished your mapping and compassing classes 😉 😀
Thanks to all of you for doing such an awesome job of setting this weekend up!!!
Hear’s  hoping Mother Nature is good to us…

Saturday morning began in a flurry, we overslept!! Trevor in a half conscience state loaded all the gear as I gathered it. We left in record time and flew up the highway through New Hampshire arriving, to our amazement, at the agreed upon place and time.
😀
Mark, Andey, Todd and Peggy were promptly on time and all in good spirits. After introductions were made and the revised plans (not bagging Mt. Hale) for the day discussed, we loaded up and traveled the final mile of Zealand Rd. to the trail head. The walk from the parking lot to the Zealand Falls Hut is best described as, leisurely, serene, picturesque and enjoyable. Trevor couldn’t get over the fact that it was so easy as he was “mule” for the day. He cheerfully packed all the poles, flag, rope, duct tape, miscellaneous equipment and all his stuff as well!!! The temperatures were cool and the conversation lively, having planned for plenty of time to reach the summit we paused for photos whenever the notion struck, as you can tell by the amount of phenomenal pictures (a most fabulous job, gentlemen) taken by Mark and Todd.Check out the Gallery and http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/tomarkallen/album?.dir=/9655&.src=ph&.tok=phwMOvBBzagwFG.3
Our group of almost complete (yes Mark, as opposed to incomplete) strangers had melded quite nicely from the start; we were well suited, good buddies by the time we reached the hut. With little effort we arrived and Peggy added another patch to her collection, we had a snack, went milling about inside and outside, shared conversation about our mission with several hikers and of course took more photos. Then we were on our way once again.
😀
The trip to Zeacliff took a bit more effort but the grand reward was worth the minimal struggle. The warmth and clear skies afforded us time to truly enjoy this fabulous place. We shared the cliffs and conversation with two people until we were joined by the “guys” from the hut who were on their way to Franconia Notch. Two women came along just before we left the cliffs. They had no idea who we were nor did we know they were the Deb and Lucy we were expecting… like ship passing in the night… Jerry also met up with us on the spur trail to the cliffs as we were leaving; he stayed at the cliffs, taking in the fabulous view for awhile, as we traveled on. He caught up a short time later, as did Deb and Lucy. The trail from the cliffs to the summit is best described as one big mud hole after another with small patches of dry ground. It made for interesting, precarious and dirty travel. One of the more humorous statements happened along this section. While making a slight descent before reaching the summit our first timer Trevor asked “Why are we going down hill?” to which Peggy promptly replied “Because the summit is down here.”
:flag:
At the summit our band of seven became eleven. With everyone there, it was time to raise ‘Ole Glory’ and 24 feet of PVC. Each took a part in raising the flag, even the hiker we came across as we made the summit. He was minding his own business but felt compelled to join in. Warren joined us as we pieced together the poles and became an active participant as well. Deb had brought a flag belonging to her Grandfather’s WWII Mountain Division. This flag was secured to the pole as well and we all lifted them both up to meet the wind. The flag stretched out across the tiny opening above Zealand summit and a cheer filled the space below. The purpose of the day was never far from our thoughts as we shared a meal, some stories and a beautiful day under the canopy of the American flag. We cheered each hiker that made the summit and told them of our purpose, we received congratulations and praise for the deed at hand and what it represented. Deb and Lucy made there way home before we brought the flag down as did our helpful hiking buddy. When our band of eight brought down the flags, Andey and Mark folded ‘Ole Glory’ with military expertise and great care. The rest of us made short work of disassembling the poles, with everything packed and no trace of us having been there, our tribe of eight began trip home. At the end of the day we all felt tired from the day’s journey and good about what we had done. I can not think of anyone else I would have rather spent the day with. An awesomely fabulous group!!! We spent time in the parking lot exchanging a few more laughs and our addresses. What I learned from the day with these determined, engaging, entertaining and humorous individuals…
😮 Complete strangers are different than incomplete strangers.
😆 You know your close when you can throw a rock from here to there.
😉 Large, young men can climb small, old trees.
🙄 There are three rings of marriage.
😮 Sometimes you must go down to reach the summit.
😀 What happens on Zealand stays on Zealand.
:flag: There is no such thing as too much fun.Thank you Peggy, Trevor, Mark, Andey, Todd, Jerry, Warren, Deb and Lucy for making this one of the most remarkable and memorable hikes of my lifetime. Your spirits are kind and remain in my memory forever.
