in reply to: How do we promote this event? #48583
I think it is a good idea to post there, but I personally think that we should wait a week or so, concidering the post about the event is still there.
in reply to: Sign Up Form (2002) #48634Nice job Greg! That is much better than just a simple email. Also want to mention that you and RJ are doing an excellent job with the updates. We are off to a good start, but still have a long way to go….
in reply to: How do we promote this event? #48581Even though things have been going extemely well after only 2 days, we should still go into phase II. This is just the first wave of initial supporters, and things will very likely slow down with just a few people signing on every now and then over the next few weeks. We also can’t have too many supporters…….
in reply to: Allow multiple sign-ups? (2002) #48640Another option is to just let the sign ups continue as is, and see how things evolve. People have and will keep changing their choices over the next several weeks. When we get into Sept, we can see how things look and if we need to we can start looking at ways to fill the unsupported peaks (by the way, in less than 48 hours we covered 1/2 the peaks, so this might not even be a problem). If we do have some unsupported peaks, we could ask multiple signups if they are willing to move, or another option is to see if some groups can suppport multiple peaks. Several peaks are very close together (Bond W. Bond, Tripyramids, Osceola’s), but we just launched 2 days ago, and I vote that we just sit back and let things evolve.
in reply to: Allow multiple sign-ups? (2002) #48636I agree with RJ. We should not try and limit the amount of supporters. Most likely 10-20% of the people who sign up will not be able to make it. If anything, we should encourage other people to sign up for a peak already supported. The more people involved, the more likely we will have flags flying on all the peaks.
in reply to: Who supplies the flags? #48611SherpaKroto had a good reply about this on another thread, but I am going to continue it here. The size of the flag should end up being the size of the one the person/group decides to carry up thier supported peak. Obviously, the bigger the flag, the farther away it will be seen from. The flag size will not matter for many of the wooded summits (Zealand, Owl’s Head, ect.), but most of the 48 have clear summits. I don’t believe that we should try and establish a standard size, but if you really want to make this a spectacular memorial, try to get the largest flag possible (within reason)Part of the challenge should actually be carrying the flag and makeshift pole to the summit, and raising the “Stars and Stripes” for as many patriotic eyes as possible.
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48621Welcome back Mary, we missed you! Your one of the key people involved in this, so get your 84 square foot flag ready, and get Tony psyched, because Sept 14th is less than 4 months away…..
From every mountainside, let freedom ring……
Looks good Greg, though we still need to add the mission statement, info on how to signup for a peak, a link to RJ’s email address, and maybe a link to a Q/A page. I am sure that there will be many questions. I am also sure there is alot more, but it is Friday evening, and I have done enough thinking for this week…….
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48614Just want to clarify a few things. This poll is just a gage to measure current enthusiasm, and the event certainly will NOT be cancelled based on the outcome of this poll. It might move to another website if Alpinezone.com doesn’t support it based on this poll, but come Sept. 14th, flags will be flying on the mountain tops…….
in reply to: Why not make it the top 50? #48599I vote that we keep with our original plan and concentrate on the 48, only because it is going to be very difficuilt just to get enough support to do the 48, let alone 50. Also, the 48 is a defined list. If we go with the 50 highest, as Sherpa Kroto pointed out, who is going to want to support the Bulge? We still need to have some people support Waumbec, Zealand, ect. And even in a few months, if we do have overwelming support, we could always just add 2 peaks, and just keep the website URL as is. I think we would have a worse situation if we expanded to 50 now, and then had to scale back to 48 later.
in reply to: URL for Web site? #48603Flags.alpinezone.com works for me….
in reply to: Why not make it the top 50? #48596Geat idea, but we still need alot of support just to be able to accomplish the 48. If we get an overwealming amount of support, then I am all for expanding to 50. I also don’t think that last 2 have to be official NE100 highest peaks. It could be whatever people are willing to do. I would love to see a flag on Guyot, one of the most spectacular/underrated peaks in the whites.
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48558Mike P.
As for Leave no trace, that will be one of the main things emphasised in this event. NO FLAGS, or any other flag paraphernalia, will be intentionally left behind. I have also been hiking quite a bit since Sept 11 (Mt Liberty, Mt Adams, Mt Katahdin, and N. and S. Twin, and I only witnessed flags that were left behind on Katahdin. I think that you either had bad luck or that I had good luck, but I think that most hikers know that leaving anything behind is a bad thing. I can assure you that LNT will be highly emphasised, next Sept 14th.in reply to: The Mission Statement #48557Great job RJ, I have no problems with your last revision.
