in reply to: Bondcliff suggestions #51328
Not only is it bad “flag etiquette” to drape a flag over the ground, no one would be able to see it…
On a beautiful peak like Bondcliff, the higher you can raise the flag (and the bigger it is) will result in the highest amount of people being able to see it. Conceivably, it can be seen from numerous summits with binoculars, and from Bond and W. Bond with the naked eye.
I also sugggest looking thru the photo galleries, and previous threads for flag pole ideas. The key thing here is light weight, easy to assemble, but STRONG enough to withstand the stress, especailly if we end up with a windy day… (though over the past years we have had barely a breeze, but you never know…)
in reply to: Status: Week 1 #51103Well said SilentCal. The main focus should always be the NH48 (hence the event name), but if some people want to raise flags on other peaks in NH or New England that’s awesome! They just won’t be officially part of this event.
The reason why we chose the NH48 is because we had to draw the line somewhere. There are so many lists and so many peaks that the variables are limitless. We also originally talked about doing the NH50 peaks for the 50 states, but couldn’t come to an agreement on definining the last 2 to make it 50. The easiest and most agreable solution was to just incorporate and focus on the NH48.
And things have turned out well! :flag: :flag:
in reply to: Add Other Hikers #50999Stephen really deserves a couple cold for his work with the site. He basically took our ideas from the planning notes minutes and made it happen exactly the way we wanted it to be presented. I’m sure it’s not an easy task and he volunteered to do it. Hats off to the man!
I totally concur! Fantastic job Stephen!
in reply to: Should we have a rain date? #50951If the weather does look threatening a few days before (hurricane, torrential rains), we will have to decide on a cancelation and post something probably by noon on Friday the 9th. If the weather is iffy (possible showers), we should post a cautionary statement. If the forcast is sunny and beautiful, we will have to post an ecouraging statement :flag: :flag: :flag:
I guess regardless of the weather we should post something pertaining to it. But hey, the weather is going to be gorgeous just like all of the past years! ๐
in reply to: Flags on the 48: The Documentary #50923Sounds good to me, but I am wondering what your plan is on raising money to cover the expenses, and how much do you expect them to cost?
As for people to interview, this event is made up of many hundreds of passionate hikers, with numerous stories. Along with all of the people who have posted on this thread (and other threads on this forum), Greg Blasko (founder of Alpinezone.com) is another excellent resource. Your inquiring on who might be willing and available to interview is the way to do it, and as previously mentioned, the Boy Scout Troops who participate in this event would be an interesting interviewโฆ Also Jaytrek57’s get-together would be a fantastic place to interview numerous participants. As for me, I am off to the hot, sunny, American Southwest (hopefully earthquake free) until July 5th…
in reply to: Flags on the 48: The Documentary #50919Hello David,
It is awesome that you have interest in this event, but I have a few questions:
If you do make a film about this event, what do you plan to do with it? Is it for a class project? Film festival?
I think that it is a great idea, but we walk a fine line between patriotism and commercialism, and we certainly don’t ever want to cross that boudary…
If this event is something that can be filmed and documented without ever being sold for profit, then I am all for it.
in reply to: Updated History Page ?? #50857dirt_girl, I think you did a fantastic job with the editing and we should take your latest draft and update the history page. Stephen, can you do this?
SilentCal, I have lots of pics from that day, but most are people shots. The photo that is currently there is a well representative picture of the day.
in reply to: Grandfathered Peaks #50869I think that this is somewhat of a minor issue. So far, only 2 people qualify for the “3 same peak in a row” grandfather status, but I do agree that people as dedicated as those have personal reasons for doing the same peak every year and should get first dibs at signing up. I think they have earned it…
in reply to: Thank You! #50848“I’m going off the rails on a crazy train….”
OzzyAwesome meeting new faces and seeing the familiar ones. Sorry I wasn’t able to spend more time there, but I did have a blast hanging out and swilling a few Guinness’s
This was a productive fun meeting with some patriotic souls… It’s people like you who keep this event alive… :flag:
SilentCal, excellent job with the planning and organization!
in reply to: Updated History Page ?? #50852Awesome job with the editing!
My only comment would be to add line spaces between paragraphs.
Well done
in reply to: Flags Weekend F.A.Q #50767My schedule is quite erratic, but I do plan on joining you all for one of the nights. As for the hiking, I am up for anything…
I also plan on bringing some firewood and a few Guinesses for any of those “Irish” hikers who like the smooth heavy brews. One Guiness has about the same amount of calories as a roast beef sandwich, but us hikers need the calories! ๐We just need some good weather! With all of this rain I am beginning to think I should start building an ark… ๐ฎ
in reply to: Highland Center update??? #50663The Highland Center is a nice choice (Hi Eric, long time no hike! We should hook up again on of these weekends! Wish I worked in the Whites you lucky B) ๐
Like everything else we do in the organization process here, we need to set up a poll (Stephen?) and let the participants decide. I tend to agree that Saturday evening would be best for a pre-gathering (not sure if there will be much of a post gathering), but lets run a poll for a few months with all of the options so far… Either Saturday or Sunday at the Highland Center with pizza (the normal cost dinner will likely not go over to well with our crowd), the Mooseland Grill, or
a cook-out at a campground (tbd). Any other ideas?in reply to: Planning weekend 2005 #50578I would be up for a planning meeting in early to mid-May. I love being above treeline in winter, but I am wimp when it comes to bugs…
in reply to: Other Forums #50533Happy ending to a potentinally tragic story…
I like the comment that “everytime you light a candle, you are lighting a small fire in you home”. My wife is big into candles, and this story shows the potential dangers.
I also want to bring up the dangers of Jiffy Pop ๐ฎ Three years ago, I was cooking some for my kids and became distracted. Before I knew it the whole thing engulfed in flames, with flaming popcorn balls shooting out of it! I bolted from the kitchen and rounded the corner to throw it into the fire place, but alas, the fireplace was filled with cardboard! I then did an about face and ran to the bathroom to throw it in the shower, with flaming grease dripping out of the bottom and little popcorn fireballs shooting out from the top! It was a bad scene!
I terminated the situation in the shower, but ended up with 2100 dollars in damage to our floors. Needless to say, that was the last time Jiffy Pop ever entered our house… ๐
And my kids still give me crap, “Hey Dad, remember the time you almost burned down our house with Jiffy pop?” ๐ณ
in reply to: 2005 Flags on the 48 #50510I also vote for Sunday, September 11th. I think that it is more appropriate to have it on the actual day whenever possible, and on the closest Saturday whenever the 11th falls on a weekday.
When we first organized this event, we spent a lot of time debating this very subject (see the old threads), and even came close to going with the actual day, regardless of what day of the week it fell on, which is clearly not practical…
