All I have to say is that it is fantastic to have people such as SilentCal and Jaytrek57 who step up and donate their time and money to make things like this happen. You guys are awesome! :flag:
in reply to: It’s official!!! All 48 were covered!!! #50376Trekman,
By my numbers, 37 were confirmed for 2003, and 39 were confirmed for 2002, though in 2002 the numbers are based on website feedback and voluntary emails responses (we never tried to contact anyone for confirmation), so the actual number is probably higher.. :flag: :flag:
in reply to: Time to pay the piper #50399Just for the record…
I dislike the idea of avertising on this site due to the nature of it. This event was organized to be a “grass roots” living memorial, to remember, honor, and pay tribute to those who were affected by Sept 11th (which includes most everyone). It was also organized to give people an outlet to patriotically express themselves. To help them deal with and cope with all of the emotions that have gripped us since that horrific day….
If we are talking about raising the $205 to cover the web hosting fees, then I am all in favor of coburg’s suggestion, which seems to solve the problem, and negates the need for any donations (though I think that it is fantasitic that people are stepping up and willing to contribute)

Powerfull story Puck. Thanks for sharing it with us… Your words are the epitome of why we all participate…
I was honored to meet you, and I look forward to seeing your flag proudly flying next year…

Also gret Floyd reference… 🙂
in reply to: Twin, North #50216Well done! Your group was another that I was concerned about due to all of the rain. Crossing the Little (wet boot) River can be tricky. There is a herd path that bypasses the 1st 2 crossings (it starts just before the 1st crossing, on your left), but you still have to do the 3rd, which is the worst. At least the water is not 34 degrees this time of year!
Awesome job! :flag: :flag:
I am not so sure that she didn’t know about it. Infact, she was hiking from Madison Hut to Lakes Hut, which is one of the most scenic hikes to do on Flags on the 48. I just think that she was making conversation and she definitely seemed overall positive about the event.
Personally, I agree with LOMU. I don’t think the WMNF is concerned, especially because we leave no trace. Now if we left our flags there, we would likely be hunted down by angy mobs with torches and pitch forks.
in reply to: Owl’s Head #50199You people kicked butt!!!! Out of all of the teams registered, I was the most concerned with yours due to all of the recent rain and the 3 major water crossings, but you people persevered, and with three 7th graders. Awesome job! Your photo’s of the Franconia Brook crossing reminded me of what it looks like in April…
Way to go Chester Academy Outing Club!! :flag:
Myself and my 10 year old daughter Shannon hiked up the Valley Way on the evening of the 10th, to spend the night at the Madison Hut. We arrived around 8:30pm, to a full capacity hut (we were the last to arrive). After we established our bunks, we ate, played chess (she beat me), and socialized with some of the many people staying at the hut this night, including Mohammed Ellozy.
On the morning of the 11th, I was up at 6:30am, but Shannon still has Z’s on her mind… It is was a beautiful day, and around 8:30, as we got ready for our climb, we met Laurie Burt (the president of the AMC, who was also staying there). She asked me what we were planning on hiking this day, and I told her all about the Flags on the 48, and that we were representing Mt. Adams. She seemed positive about the event, but did joking state “I won’t notify the Forest Service about what you are doing” 😀
Shannon and I left the hut at 9:40 and start heading up to Adams. Once we approached the Gulfside Trail, we saw Kris (Little Bear) and her husband Dan waiting for us. We join forces and headed up to Adams.
We arrived on the summit at 11:00am and relaxed for a while. At 11:30, we start putting together the flag pole, and at 11:50 we proudly raised Old Glory. There is not much of a breeze, but occasionally it was strong enough to make the flag wave. :flag:
We were accompanied by a few other enthusiastic hikers who were taking pictures, and soon after I hear whistling coming from the west. A few friends of mine now come into view, Post’r Boy, Michelle (Chickety), Sue (Stinkyfeet), Andy, and Swamp Yankee were rising to the summit! What a surprise! They came up via King Ravine and the Great Gully Trail , such an easy route, you slackers 😉
We sat around chatting and looking for other flags. We saw flags on Moriah, Madison, Wildcat D, and Jefferson. Such a beautiful day, and with the best company!
We packed up at 2pm and started heading down. On the Airline trail, we came across a French Canadian hiker who told us that Sept 11th was in the past, and it was time for people to stop bringing it up. Life goes on, he said. Well it is because of ignorant people like him that I will be taking a flag up a mountain every year for as long as I am able. We will never forget!!!!
Shannon and I arrived at the Mooseland at 7pm, and had a blast seeing old faces and some new ones. What a fantastic ending to such a memorable day! :flag:
Smitty,
We plan on leaving the hut between 9:30-10:00, so if you and Max arrive before these these times definitely look for us.
As for the Hut, they are quite pricy (and quite loud with snorers from what I hear), but they are also a great way for a 10 year old to climb a peak like Adams and still be able to enjoy it…

in reply to: Did the……. #49965I suggest updating the press release to show the new (Dirt Girl’s editied) version of the history. We also still need to update the Q/A page to show these changes…
Hello Dirt,
Yes, we will be flying the same 96 square foot flag from the past 2 events (along with the original flag pole from the Liberty hike 3 years ago). Just hope it’s not too windy otherwise the whole thing might end up landing in the ocean 😮
We will also be looking out for your flag on Wildcat D!
Lets just wish that the weather shines for us all…
I would recommend taking the Lonesome Lake Trail to the Hi-Cannon Trail to the summit. It is the shortest and most popular trail to the summit. It does have some steep sections, but all the trails up Cannon have a few of them. If you are running late there is always the Tram to the summit, or if your too tired to hike down the Tram is the way to go…
in reply to: Welcome to the 2004 Routes/Teams Forum #50096BTW, which 6 peaks are unconfirmed? I might know some of the people.
in reply to: Welcome to the 2004 Routes/Teams Forum #50095I strongly agree with MtnMagic, an email is much less obtrusive than a google search with an unexpected phone call… 😮
Another thing to consider is some of the people might be on vacation (similar to SilentCal), and might not be reachable. If you re-open their peaks, you should emphasize that there is a good chance that there might be multiple flags flying (just so the new person isn’t surprised when they get there).
