Korphine,
Were you one of the people who signed our guest book on Jefferson? The woman who was hiking with her 2 kids?
Glad you are participating on Wildcat D. You are definitely making a difference, and if you raise your flag on the tower, it will likely be seen by numerous peaks, and possibly Rt 16…
Thanks for being a part of this…

in reply to: Solo Hikers on the Bonds #50055Hello Puck,
First of all, thanks for signing up for West Bond, one of the more spectular peaks in the Whites…
Second, I wouldn’t worry about hiking solo this time of year. Infact, you will be seeing MANY other hikers on the trails with the scenic peak you have chosen…
Third, if you are concerned about safety you might want to reconsider your route. Climbing West Bond from Zealand is a little shorter and a little easier than from the Wilderness Trail. It also is better sheltered from T-Storms (you avoid the heavily exposed section between Bondcliff and Bond), and has 2 staffed shelters (Zealand Hut and Guyot campsites/shelter). If you do encounter bad weather, I would advise heading to Guyot Shelter (.7 miles from W. Bond summit) as opposed to bushwhacking down to the Franconia Brook Trail which is tough going thru thick spruce trees up high (gets better down low), and certainly adds to making a bad situation worse…
If you are looking to add safety with a buddy system, try finding a partner by posting an event on VFTT, AZ, or GONE. There is a good chance that you might find another patriotic hiker to join you, but believe me, you will never be alone on the trails on a Saturday in the Pemi in Sept (unless there is a hurricane coming)…
in reply to: Owl’s Head #50029I only see 44 peaks taken. Looks like Cabot, Garfield, Tecumseh, and Willey have been inadvertently ommitted…
in reply to: Signups for 2005 #49990The automated sign-up process definitely made it easy to register for a peak, but IMO, it would have been of greater value if multiple people were allowed to sign up. I understand the concept of trying to deter people to some of the less popular peaks, but some of the people who participated in the last 2 events now feel like they were snubbed, and that does not do us any good, especially if they do not participate…
I am all for uncontrolled sign-ups. I like the idea of people having the freedom to be able to pick and choose what ever peak they want, regardless of whether someone else has already signed up for it. A peak that is already taken is somewhat a deterrent in itself, but IMO we should not limit people’s participation, in any way whatsoever…
in reply to: I want to do this! #49882I agree with MtnMagic, the signup status seems to be a little out of date…

in reply to: Summit Signs #49727Hello Dirt_Girl,
You did a great job editing my original “history” summation, and I have no problems with Greg updating it.
As for the original 6:
After 3 days of being angry and confused, I started a thread on the AMC Hiker’s Journal on Sept 14th, 2001, looking for hikers to climb Mt Liberty with me to display a large flag. I owned a 3X5, and was looking for something bigger, so it could be seen from the summit. Margret Mary posted that she had a 8X12 (which was perfect!). We set a meeting time at the White House trailhead, and several other people emailed me stating that they would also be there.
At 9:00am, on the 15th, Myself, Margret Mary (MMM), her husband Tony (a Police Officer), Gail L., her friend Joe, and surprise, surprise, Rob (The_Back_Country_Explorer), shows up. I have hiked with Rob in the past, but he is the only one I know personally (I had seen many of Gail and MMM’s post’s on the AMC site).
At 9:00am we disperse the flag paraphernalia, and head up. After raising the flag, we experience what is hard to put into words…
Numerous hikers show up, some crying, some praying, some reflecting, many taking picures, and all thanking us for proudly displaying such a beautiful sight, something so many of us took for granted before Sept 11th. Soon a youth church group shows up, and they start praying and speaking their thoughts about the emotional time we are in. I will never forget that day, ever…
A few days later, we are all back online and decide to do something much grander for the 1 year anniversary. We form a committe, which Greg listed (and he was a key part of where we are today).
After organizing the 2002 event, Margret Mary disappeared. Spencer also fell back. RJ, who did what Stephen is doing now, also disappeared. Gail has participated every year, and Greg is still a key guy.
But the reason why we are still growing and improving is because of people like Greg, Stephen, SilentCal, MichealJ, MtnMagic, Jaytrek57, NH_Mtn_Hiker, and many others… Including you dirt_girl. Lets keep posting our thoughts to make this years event the best it can be…
in reply to: 100% signups! #49789Things are looking great! 8)
Responding to SilentCal’s responses:
1) I definitely think that we should still promote this event on other sites, for several reasons. We really need to include other interested hikers to increase the chance of all peaks being covered. Based on past events, just because people signed up did not mean that a flag was flown. The more people we have, the higher the probability. It also lets people get involved, who in turn will likely want to participate next year.
2) As far as on-call hikers go, the big problem with this is with the flag bearers notifying us that they can’t make it, which has been a problem in the past. We need to emphasize that even if they have to cancel the night before, they need to notify us. Also, what do the on-call people do if there are no peaks available?
3) I concur.
4) Business cards are a great idea. I could have passed out a 100+ over the past 10 months to hikers I have met and talked about this event with. I’ll do a little research on this…
5) The big problem that I see with establishing a list is where do you draw the line? There are over 100 non-NH48 scenic peaks that could be added just for the Whites alone (from 2000-5000′), and if you add in other states, it’s almost endless. It might be a more productive gesture just to allow people to sign up for a “sub-peak” of there choice.
Just my 2 cents…
