The notebook that circulated at the Mooseland was the one that Littlebear brought on our hike up Jefferson (a great idea she had, I might add). Scanning and posting personal thoughts on the web is a touchy thing. I don’t believe that anyone who signed her notebook (including me) had any thoughts about having those thoughts posted online.

We should definitely warn people that that if they sign a memorial book then their thoughts MAY be posted online, though I doubt anyone will have a problem with that (just might slightly change what they write…)

I thought that the Mooseland last year was 5X better than the Woodstock Inn the previous year (too crowded, had the Highland games going on). The Mooseland is big, economical, and also serves Guiness draft

I like both Stephen’s and SilentCal’s suggestions, so why not combine the two?

Certain people who have already signed up might not want other hikers to join them, so to allow other hikers to join without their permission might not be fair.

What about this, once all of the peaks are officially taken, email all of the primary flagbearers and ask if it is ok for other interested hikers to join them.

Generate a new sign-up list for participating (the word backup might deter people) hikers. Then we promote to the popular regional websites, and allow all to participate for the peaks that are willing to accept company.

For each peaks organizational details, follow up with detailed discussions in the forums or email.

One thing that we can’t take for granted is that just because all of the peaks are taken on the sign-up form that everything will turn out. In 2001, 11 people signed up to climb Liberty, and only 6 showed. In 2002, all 48 peaks were taken, yet only 39 were confirmed. In 2003, 40 peaks were taken with 37 confirmed.

This year, on the 3rd anniversary, lets make the White Mountains, America, the veterans who sacrifice for our freedom, and all of the people who lost loved ones on Sept, 11, 2001 proud by covering them ALL…

            Pedxing,

I read your posting(s) on thebackpacker.com, and all I can say is you are so inspiring! You have been thru so much and you still want to participate. I am in awe…

            For everyone else,

What’s is the plan for promoting the event? MichealJ is ready to post on VFTT. Who is planning on posting on the other sites? Unless someone else wants to, I will volunteer to email the GMC, ADK, & WOC sites (they have no forums, so emails to the key people are about as far as we can go).

I will also post on the Highpointer’s, RMC, and Backpackers’s site’s. I will also email Ken Leonard, who runs the GONE site (Get Outdoors New England), and he will add a message to his weekly email blurb which goes out to over 1000 registered users (we have had quite a few participate over the past 2 years)

We also need some volunteers to post on the AMC, AZ, and the ATC (and anything else people think of).

We also need to pitch in on some of these forums to keep the posts going for a little while. I do also strongly believe that overposting is a negative thing and will hurt our cause…

The only problem I foresee is that we are limiting the sign-ups and once a peak is taken no-one else can sign up. So what do we do if other people want to join in?

For the past 2 events, I posted a statement to these sites: VFTT, AMC, RMC, GMC, CMC, ADK, WMC, WMO, GONE, and backpacker.com. We should also post something on Thebackpacker.com, and ATC sites. If anyone can think of others, please post them.

As for a statement, lets brainstorm this…

Awesome job! This site has come along way over the past 2 years…

Lets just hope that the weather gods are kind to us this year (we have been lucky so far)…

I am also in favor of the “first come/first served approach”. If we set boundries for people it will likely turn them off. It’s hard enough as it is to get people to join in.

As for the “easily accessible” peaks, we could always highlight them with an *, and mention that they are preferred for people who do not wish to hike. But if someone signs up, I don’t think that we should try and deter them.

I vote for May 1, 8, or 15th. I am unable to attend anything from the end of May thru June. May is also early enough to implement any ideas that come from this “get together”. As far as hiking goes, bugs are few and far between which is awesome. The trails might have some mud down low and some snow in the higher elevations, but that makes it more fun! 😀

I suggest that Greg set up an automated poll and we go with the majority. I doubt that there will be a date that everyone can attend, so some of us will just have to be there in spirit…

I don’t see anything wrong with emailing everyone from last year to let them know about the May get together. We also should post a sticky with all of the details, once everything is finalized. So the date is May 8th, with some day hikes planned, then a 6:00pm discussion time around the campfire? One thing I just noticed, May 9th is Mother’s Day, so I will have to leave around sunrise to make sure I am home early, otherwise I risk suffering the “wrath of the little woman”.

I like the Hancock Campground idea. Great location, and if it rains we can spend the day at the Woodstock Inn discussing things over a few

Tripoli Road should be open for camping with it’s numerous sites. Kinda like “wild west” camping with no facilities and occasional intoxicated neighbors firing celebratory shots in the air… Yeee-haaa!!! BANG! BANG!

I like the CNH idea, but I think that would limit some of the from attending (nothing like car camping for socializing).

I am surprised to hear that Lafayette Place doesn’t open until May 28th. I thought they were open year round? Ammonoosuc Campground in Twin Mt usually opens early. I think any campground will do, especailly because we will likely be their only business that weekend… I am also up for the CNH if everyone wants to do that (don’t have to worry about the weather).

                            I’ll be there…

One of the things that we can discuss is a launch date. Memorial Day certainly seems appropriate.

If the weekend ends up with rain (as Michael mentioned in a earlier thread) we could always spend our time planning things under a dry roof with pints keeping our spirits high…

A planning party is something that has been mentioned in the past, and is a great excuse to get away for a weekend. I will not be available from late May thru most of June, but If you plan one earlier, I’ll be there 🙂

My biggest concern over the last 2 years has been people who sign up (mostly for major peaks like Washington and Adams) and do not show up 🙁 . In 2002, Adams, Jefferson, and Washington did not ever have any confirmation, and these are the 3 highest peaks in the Northeast!

In 2003, Adams, Pierce, and Washington were left out. People tend to sign up becuse these peaks are available, but for whatever reason don’t make it. I hope to show justice on Adams next year…

I think that if we had peak coordinators (people assigned to organize a region of peaks, one of which they would hike, and communicated closely with the rest of the peak supporters in that region), we would minimize the no-shows, and would likely find out about them in advance enabling us to fill them in…

Which brings us to the other problem… enough support to cover them all. In 2002 we had all the peaks covered on paper, but it did not turn out that way….

All of you have great ideas on how to expand this event. Lets work over the winter to expand these ideas and make the next Sept 11 a day that no one ever forgets….

                              More to follow soon…

                                Excellent post SilentCal!

                                1) I would be up for getting together and discussing the planning next year, but keep in mind that alot of it can be done online. When we first organized this thing, we talked about getting together to do some planning, but soon realized that we could be more efficient online. I am certainly not opposed to getting together, infact if you set a date and place I will be there. 🙂

                                2) I like the idea of starting the promotions earlier, like maybe Memorial Day.

                                3) Flyers are something we have never done and I think that they would be successful. We have to start using other methods than mainly hiking BB’s. We also have to be careful about over promoting on the BB’s if we start early.

                                4) I totally agree

                                5) Maybe we should add something about this to the Q&A. We do have a few scout troops participate every year. We also should contact the Boy/Girl Scouts of America and see if they can get the word out to all of their NE chapter leaders.

                                6) Not only the obscure, but also some of the tougher peaks like Adams this year, and Jefferson last year (both were supported, but it doesn’t appear that a flag actually made it to the top ). We need to emphasize that if people can’t make it, they have to let us know and have their named removed from the sign-up list. I also think that on peaks like Whiteface, Passaconaway, N. Hancock. etc, (where the summits are wooded but have a clearing nearby) people should fly the flags on the scenic outlook and not the theoretical summit. They are close enough, and it might get more people interested in those types of peaks.

                                7) We can try and make it a weekend event, though many of the people who participate live within an hour or 2 drive. Don’t know what we would get for a turnout.

                                8. Great Idea! Also keep in mind that word of mouth goes a long way. The publicity was better this year, yet we had less of a turnout. I think much of that is due to people becoming more complacent as time goes by… Kinda sad 😥

                                9) Even though I don’t have the original flag, I do have the original flagpole which has been used all 3 times. No matter what ends up happening with this event, I will still be heading up a different mountain every year with my flag (around September 11th) for the rest of my life, or as long as I physically am able…

The patches are now officially on order. I left off the year so that people from last year, who did not participate this year, can also use them. I am also not accepting any donations for these patches, but I do thank everyone for offering. The people who participate in this event are top notch! You donate your time, energy, and sweat to haul a flag and a pole up a mountain and you do it all for remembrance. A cause that can never be forgotten. There should be more people in this great nation like you (too many take it for granted). You rock!

Those of you who have contacted me, expect your patches to arrive in the mail in 3 weeks.

Those of you who personaly know me (and as I think about it, are quite a few), I will give you your patches personally, several of you at work :D, and a few of you on our upcoming Katahdin trip.

We can never forget Sept 11, and we hope to see you all with flags flying high next year…

On every mountain side, let freedom ring….
