in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49132
You can view the patch MFG’s artwork here http://community.webshots.com/user/frodo2112
Due to several requests, I am having them put the year on it just below the mountains to see how it looks. I am still unsure on if we should have it on the patch. The main reason is the patch can also be used by people who participated last year, but not this year.
I have received requests for about 25 patches, so I am going to only order 100. Should have them in about 2 weeks. If you would like one, and haven’t requested any yet, please let me know.
Greg, I tried posting the image using IMG, but it still comes out blank. Sorry.
in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49122A calendar is a fantastic idea, but there are 2 problems. It would take several thousand $$$ to do our own calendar, and how could we pick the 12 best summit photos? Impossible. They are all spectacular!
As for the patch, we could put the year on it, but it just means a new patch every year which costs a few bucks. If there is no year, then we can use the same patch, but there certainly is something special about seeing the year… I could go either way on that one.
We could always add “let freedom ring”, but I agree with Silent Cal about leaving 9-11 Memorial Hike. We have to emphasize why we are doing this…
in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49114Thats strange, when I click on it I go right to it. I wonder if it is because of my IP address. I do have the preferences set to “public viewing”
I also just posted it to the Mt Jefferson pics http://forums.alpinezone.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album58&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
everyone can definitely see it there. I wish that I could just post it here like a large emoticon.in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49112I posted an idea for a patch here: http://community.webshots.com/user/frodo2112
Just click on it to view it in “gigantic size”. The quality of the grahics are not that great due to translation, but the concept is there. Please post your thoughts…
Every color we add costs alot more $$$, so we need to keep them to a min. I figured the most appropriate would be red, white and blue. One as a base material and 2 as stitching colors.
Anyone else who has some ideas, definitely post them. Lets work together to come up with something that best represents the Flags on the 48.
in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49109SilentCal,
It’s about 2×3 inches (can be slightly bigger though). I have a basic concept set up, but the main clip art I have is in Mac and I have PC…
Any Mac users out there?????
in reply to: Time to start the Thank You’s… #49102Greg,
And a HUGE thank you to yourself for donating your awesome website and for contibuting your time and energy in keeping this event going. I don’t even want to think about how this event would have turned out over the past 2 years without your support and dedication. Your a class act, and I hope to thank you in person one day…
in reply to: Mount Jackson Hat #49084Cool idea! 8) We should look into similar things to promote the event, like patches, t-shirts, and bumper stickers.
in reply to: Domain Name #49090I’ll pitch in Greg, let me know what you need.
in reply to: Original Liberty Flag #49086The original Liberty flag was Mary and Tony’s who participated in the first hike. The Eisenhower and Jefferson flag is one I bought shortly after. It would have been great to keep the same flag going, but they kind of disappeared shortly after we officially organized the Flags on the 48 đ„
in reply to: Peak count (2003) #49062Peak Name: Jefferson
# of people in party: 5
Short description of rigging and pole system: 15 foot long, 2″ dia PVC cut into (3) 5′ sections. Each joint supported with (4) 18″ long steel rods fastened with duct tape. Multiple nylon guy lines.
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): Post flyers at visitor centers, huts, Highland center, Pinkham, Trailheads, REI, EMS, any other hiking related store that will allow it, 2 months in advance. Organize trips thru hiking clubs. I know a few AMC trip leaders and I will try and see if they will run a few trips next Sept 11th. Keep the word of mouth going over the next year. Over the winter/spring it would be great if an article or 2 were published in an Outdoor magazine like AMC Outdoors, Appalachia, Backpacker, etc. I plan on contacting Mike Lanza who writes for several of those. I will also contact Katherine Wroth and Madeleine Eno who write for AMC Outdoors. Lets all work hard and make next year even more special…in reply to: My Thoughts on Today’s Event! #49029The 5 of us; myself, Kris (Little Bear), Joan, Bob, and Margarita, started up the Caps Ridge Trail to Jefferson at 9am. Kris gave us all small flags to hang off our pack, and also gave us laminated âFlags on the 48 history statementsâ to fasten to our packs. Way to go Kris!
It was a beautiful day, with blue sky galore as we casually made our way up the short (but rugged) trail. We reached the summit at 11:40 and unpacked the 96 sq. ft flag , 15 foot long 2â dia PVC flag pole, 100â of rope, 8 steel joint supports, and one jumbo sized roll of duct tape.
We raised the flag at noon into mild winds, and quickly tied down all of the guy lines. Several of the hikers who were up there joined in to help. We heard several âwowâsâ, as Old Glory flapped in the wind providing a sharp contrast of color to the barren granite landscape.
We spent the next 2 hours talking with all of the 50+ hikers who showed up while we were there. Kris also brought along a guest book for people to sign and express their feelings (another fantastic detail provided by her). We could clearly see the flag on Monroe, but could not see any flag on Adams or Washington (Washingtonâs summit is obstructed by the observatory though). We sadly removed the flag and hardware at 2:10, packed it all up and started back down leaving without a trace. We all commented on how empty the summit looked.
On the way down, many people who were still heading up/down asked me what I was carrying (three 5 foot long , 2â dia pieces of PVC tubing duct taped together in a bundle). Jokingly, I told them things like; backcountry pole vault, musical instrument, extra plumbing from the outhouse we just installed on the summit, and a potato gun, which could launch 3 potatoes at the same time for about 1/2 a mile. After seeing those surprised faces, I quickly told them the truth… đ
We headed to the Mooseland Grill afterwards to eat, , and be merry with many of the other hikers who participated in this event. We reminisced, took many pictures, traded names with faces, and one of the highlights of the evening is when Jaytrek showed up with a massive bag of flag bandannaâs and handed them out to everyone. There were nothing but positive comments and stories about everyoneâs experiences, and we all canât wait to do it again next year!
Sept 11th will never be forgotten….
in reply to: Boston.com Article #49026Fantastic article! Great job Lisa, Gail and Julie!
Lisa and Julie, it was a pleasure meeting you 2 today…
Gail, never forget, your one of the main reasons why this event even exists…
Awesome job everyone!
in reply to: A few more mentions… #49000They also mention it in Boston.com
in reply to: I’m out. :( #48989Sorry to hear about your daughter. You certainly have your priorities right. Last Friday, my 5 year old son was hovering in his bed and vomiting like the exorcist… Good thing it only lasted for 1 day!
Good luck with everything, and we will be thinking about you and your family on Jefferson this Saturday.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill Tally #48940I have been waiting to try and get a more accurate head count before I posted a responce, but expect between 2-6 people from my group.
