in reply to: celebrating after flags on the 48 ? #48667
It would be neat to meet up with everyone. However, we’re basecamping in the Great Gulf Friday and Saturday night. Making a weekend out of the event! So, unfortunately (or fortunately), we’ll still be in the woods. 😉
in reply to: How do we promote this event? #48582Does anyone think it’s worthwhile to post this event in VFTT’s new Trips / Events forum? It’s already mentioned in Q&A and we don’t want to be redundant, but the new forum is a better place to ‘announce’ it.
in reply to: I will be off-line… #48641I’m back and the Peaks list has been updated.
in reply to: How do we promote this event? #48580Thanks pedxing. If everyone helps spread the word, the message will get out there.
Actually, it looks like it already has as almost half the peaks are accounted for!

The way I see it there are three answers to this:
1 – Yes. Definitely
2 – Yes. But only after all the peaks have been assigned
3 – No. First come. First Served.Actually, in retrospect, #1 and #2 are the only answers. We certainly can’t, and wouldn’t want to disallow multiple supporters. I suppose all we can do is encourage folks to sign up for different peaks. How do we proceed?
in reply to: Allow multiple sign-ups? (2002) #48637Okay. My only concern is that by accepting multiple sign-ups from the get-go, not every peak will be supported and there will be multiple supporters on the more popular peaks. Is it reasonable to not accept multiple sign-ups until all peaks are taken? Is it worthwhile to run a poll on this issue?
in reply to: Flags of the 48 launch date #48602Just for the record, the official launch date was yesterday, 7/23/2002! 😀
Locking thread.
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48624Well, yesterday was the official launch of the event, so this poll is probably no longer needed. We will continue to provide support for this event in the form of the Flags on the 48 Web site and these forums.
I’m going to “un-sticky” this topic.
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48561No further comments so I’m considering the mission statement as final. Locking thread.
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48623Only a month or so left on this poll. Come on everyone! Let’s spread the word!!!

I’ve been looking at prices for the flags. Best I’ve found for a 40 sq ft is $57, 60 sq ft is $73, and 96 sq ft, $125. Anyone find anything better? I’ve been unable to find an 84 sq ft flag anywhere. Might consider using smaller flags, that way they will continue to be flown at everyones homes, etc. – SherpaKroto
Let’s continue this discussion here:
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48560I reopened this discussion as I had a few comments on the mission statement now that we’re a bit closer to the event. I feel it’s a bit wordy, and made suggestions in red bold below:
“On September 11th, 2001 the consciousness of United States of America was inexorably altered by an unprovoked and unjustifiable act of terrorism so far reaching in its scope, that our country will not soon heal from this wound[delete]. Thousands of innocent lives were lost in a fleeting moment as families still try to piece together their shattered lives and return to some semblance of normalcy.
We in the hiking community would like to honor those fallen heroes by flying the American flag atop of all 48 four thousand foot and higher mountains in New Hampshire on Saturday, September 14, 2002, in conjunction with the observance of National Remembrance Day. By demonstrating our steadfast unity as Americans and as hikers, we hope to express our unwavering support to the families and to the communities whose losses are beyond [delete] comprehension and whose sacrifices will forever remain in our hearts.”
Thoughts?
I’ve done a few updates including adding the mission statement. I think we may want to break it up into a few pages, namely the home page with mission statement, the mountain list/sign-up, and the FAQ which probably can include MMM’s “instructions for participants” suggestions. Comments/suggestions?
