in reply to: The ‘Committee’ and voting #48572
Okay – well, I have a poll set up HERE for voting on this issue. It’s kind of a lame script. The problem with this system is we can only run one poll at a time, but it will get us by for now, until the new version of phpBB with poll capabilities is released – whenever that is.
Should we have a poll about how long to run the polls? 😮 For now – we’ll let this one run until the end of the month. Vote now!
in reply to: How do we promote this event? #48574We should certainly keep this thing as ‘grassroots’ as possible. Feel free to refer family and friends who are hikers to this forum and the upcoming Web page. Believe me, word of mouth goes a long way.
AlpineZone is currently seeing over 7,000 unique visitors per month. This will surly increase as the skiing season draws near (traffic can double in the winter). Hopefully folks stopping by to the skiing forums above will see this forum and check it out to learn more about the event. I also suspect there are a lot of lurkers on these boards that don’t actively post – just have a look at some of the threads’ view counts. In the mean time spread the word.
The AMC Hiker’s Journal board may also be a great place to promote this but I’m a bit reluctant to post anything there as I’ve gotten some flack for posting links to the site in the past. There are a bunch of other boards out there where this event can be promoted, but again I’m taking a hands-off approach.
Any other thoughts?
in reply to: The name of the event #48528Sorry I’ve been away for so long – just unbelievably busy. I don’t think this is ‘arguing’ as much as it is ‘discussing’ or ‘debating’. Also, I think there is some importance to the name of the event, especially in terms of the Web site, this forum, and spreading the word. Therefore, personally I don’t think we should brush this point off so soon.
With that said, I think we can agree that the name will take on two parts. The second part has consistently been some variation of “A September 11th Memorial Hike”. If we can achieve a consensus on that, the only portion to ‘vote’ on would be whether we go with:
- “Flags on the 48”, or
- From Every Mountain Top”
Assuming there are no other suggestions, I prefer “Flags on the 48” as I feel it best describes the event. My feeling is the ‘committee’ should vote on this as we’ve done on the other topics. Thoughts?
in reply to: The name of the event #48522I like “Flags on the 48: A September 11 Memorial Hike”
A little long but I think it gets the point across well.
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48542RJ had a great prototype going. How about posting it and any others here?
in reply to: Raise other nations’ flags? #48521As RJ pointed out via Email, we have absolutely no authority or even right to restrict others if they wish to display the flags of other countries that were equally affected by this tragedy. The American Flag will be the primary focus but other flags are welcome. Thread locked.
in reply to: Setting the Date (was: I’ll start) #48509In a 5 to 1 vote by the ‘committee’, it was decided the memorial hike date will be Saturday, September 14, 2002.

Sept 14, which is the National Remeberance Day for the tragedy.Has this been officially announced or stated somewhere for 2002? I know 9/14 was a National Day of Mourning after the tragedy, but will it continue beyond this year?
in reply to: Raise other nations’ flags? #48516I agree with Mary. If people want to raise flags from other countries affected by this tragedy, so be it; as long as it’s not in lieu of the American flag.

Then I think this thread should be retitled “setting the date” or something, because I did not know it was exclusively for that purpose, as it hadn’t started out that way.Mary – You’re right. This thread sort of evolved into the date discussion. I manually appended to the topic title (didn’t appear to screw anything up either – phew…) to better describe this thread’s theme. Sorry if I came off a bit harsh by suggesting using different threads for different topics. I’m just trying to keep the discussions as organized as possible. 😀
in reply to: Setting the Date (was: I’ll start) #48503I can certainly get some time off if we do it on the Wednesday, but I’m not sure everyone that wants to participate will be able to.
Also, aside from the fact that it may take time (overnight camps) to get folks positioned to hike the more isolated peaks by noon, let’s not forget about those who’ll need to travel to get into the Whites in the first place. I live in CT and will most likely want to stay up there a night or two. We should consider that as well.
However, I do like the idea of having a memorial hike on the exact date for all the reasons stated above.

Third, what do you all think of this idea of raising flags from other nations? Please try to post separate threads (which I did) for different issues. Otherwise we will get one long thread of unrelated topics. Thanks.
