free steak,:
i guess i missed the steak…
anyway – dirt girl did write “free admission to the event”, not the campsite – so i did get that since we did a peak with a “state” parking area at the bottom we didn’t have to pay a USFS fee to park for the event..in reply to: Miles traveled to the event #53225@dirt_girl wrote:
Hey Hiker3791! 😀
If you traveled farther than Ken to hike this event you could claim the title and the free admission to next years event!!! :flag:
I didn’t know there were more hikers from Central NY.
Tom Laurie and Ken are the only ones I knew about.dirt_girl
what free admission – it cost me $20????
in reply to: Miles traveled to the event #53219why do you ask about the “blue trails”? do you need company?? if so, i would like to do the other 2 someday, i am not in a big hurry since the patches for the other 2 look the same as the Quinnipiac (just a different name on each), but if i have someone else to go with i would do them…
in reply to: Miles traveled to the event #53217in reply to: Miles traveled to the event #53216in reply to: Miles traveled to the event #53213834 is the grand total round trip odometer reading for me to fly flags – i plotted it on a map program to see what it was for each leg of the trip – to get to woodstock – it was 328 miles (i came the shortest way possible using side roads from vermont, not interstate 93) – – to get from woodstock, NH to the adirondacks, NY on sunday was 179 miles (on monday 9/11 i flew the flag on mount marcy, n.y.) – – and it was 309 miles to get home from the adirondacks… that only equals 816, so the other 18 miles is getting gas & munchies i guess (or the odometer could be off a bit)…

Ken – did I meet you at KOA or … ?
-TrekMannot sure – i met so many people that i never met before (and some that i had met 2 years before) that it is hard to remember everyone that i met – – i did most of my hanging out at the fire furthest from the bathrooms/office…

We have contemplated earlier sign-ups, but we worry about cancelations. It’s hard enough to get people to committ to a hike 2 months in advance, let alone 3 or 4…
i didn’t say “3 or 4 months” i said before the summer vacation time which would only be 2 weeks earlier…

A simple solution might be to hold the selection process earlier, so that someone like me can plan further in advance.
i think it should be before july – vacation time starts in july – some vacations are away from computers (like if you are hiking or canoeing)…

It would be nice to finish my 48’s… on Madison… on my 148th birthday!:D
wow – “148” i didn’t think you looked that old – what kind of skin cream do you use???
in reply to: How did you learn of Flags on the 48? #52901i was working on finishing my 115 – that day i was hiking lafayette, lincoln, lafayette and garfield – i left lincoln (not knowing anything, didn’t see a flag), and arrived at garfield around 2pm – some people at the summit told me that i “just missed the flag” – then they explained that they flew flags on all the summits that day – – so i looked it up on the internet and the next year i flew my own on the peak that i had finished my 115 on a that year a few months earlier…
so my vote is “word of mouth”.i would be there about 5pm – so it may be worse than what you saw at 1:30 – maybe i should be on the safe side, take I-90 and “break even” on the time – – – if i was just going by myself to hike like i usually do, it wouldn’t matter if i got there at 11pm – but since there will be others around to talk to when i get up there, it would be nice to be earlier…

I remember watching the blurred images replayed countless times on the television.
i was in the office at work when i heard about it – we went outside and could see the smoke from 11 miles away in queens – then we turned on the TV to see what they were saying – when the second plane hit i was in another room trying to call my brother (a TV transmitter technician)who starts work there at 6am monday thru friday – he worked for channel 31 and channel 4 (all the n.y.c. TV stations had transmitters on the top floor of the first tower that was hit) i just got a busy signal each time i called – then i decided that he must be talking to someone about it, so i called another brother to see if he had heard anything – – and he did – my (TV technician) brother had gone to work late sunday night to disconnect the transmitter from the antenna so a new antenna could be installed – he was offered a day off for coming in on sunday – he chose tuesday, so he was home on his day off at the time that it happened – almost all the guys that he knew from the other TV stations and the motorola technicians all ended up dead…
