i will come by – not sure what time – if there was a 4 lane interstate from mt. marcy to twin mountain it would be a 2 hour drive (but since it is all state roads my progress depends on the guy in front of me).

        >>I think we can all agree that some things were good (automation) and some weren’t (lockout on the additional hikers).<<

so that there are no “lockouts” if more want to do the same peak they could be numbered 1st alternate, etc., etc. when they sign up – if the first one backs out for some reason – the first alternate can become the “leader” (etc. etc.) – they would all be part of the “team” for that mountain to participate for that day, but there would at least be some way of being able to tell who is next in line to get it all together if someone can’t make it – – – also you would have thier e-mails on file to try to persuade some to go for un-covered peaks if they all don’t get covered – with the signups the way they are now if someone’s favorite peak is taken, you might lose them, you don’t even get thier e-mail address to contact them next year etc.

          >>I think, b/c of the interest a “lottery” type system makes some sense. Whereas people/crews sign-up for the event itself…not specifically the peak. I understand one’s desire to do a certain peak…however, if the demand/interest grows, avenues of including all need to be explored.<<

lottery isn’t such a good idea – if i live on the south west side, and get stuck with a peak on the northeast side i wouldn’t bee too happy about the extra 1.5 hours that i would have to travel – – you could break it up by area and have a lottery for each area to keep from makeing a shot trip for some into a long trip.

            >>>This would be a great idea. Is there any way of contacting the party doing Washington this year? We still may have a veterans group helping out and it would be a great gesture if we could put some kind of mixed group together.<<<

the same guy has done it twice so far so i assume he is doing it again – only problem is that his group has done it in the morning (so the flag would be up at the time the towers fell) that is why he also made it into a camping expedition (left at 8:30pm on 9/10) he must have thought i was interested in his climb since i was sent the e-mail about where & what time to meet him (i then informed him that i was doing n.y.) – – – i was told back in may that c.o.t. was doing 9/11 again in ’04 by the guy who started it, so i told him i’ll get n.y. again.

              >>We should try to get some NYPD or FDNY folks to do Washington to also be included as part of the “Cops on Top” memorial.<<

washington was covered last year by a group for cops on top (and the previous year) – somehow i was on his group e-mail list for the climb – he left wednesday night with his group and they camped someplace on the way up and raised the flag thursday morning on the summit.

i tried to get more officers involved to do mt. marcy with me (a 5 hour ride from n.y.c.), but most of them have had too many donuts to make the 16 mile trip up marcy. and by the date the 4 others (2 from upstate n.y. with a shorter drive than me) said they couldn’t make it (enthusiasm dies out over time) so i went up wednesday night, hit a bear while doing 70 on the northway (the car still went)so, i climbed marcy thursday, went home, got another car and then went to south kinsman saturday.

                “sub-peaks of thier choice”

                >>>5) The big problem that I see with establishing a list is where do you draw the line? There are over 100 non-NH48 scenic peaks that could be added just for the Whites alone (from 2000-5000′), and if you add in other states, it’s almost endless. It might be a more productive gesture just to allow people to sign up for a “sub-peak” of there choice.<<<

                that is a good idea!
i was just thinking the other area state highpoints only, but the idea of signing up for any other peaks (“sub-peak of thier choice”) would be very good – if you make a list from the sign ups it could add quite a few more flags flying and help prevent overpopulating the popular ones with people that wanted to participate but were either too late for the sign ups or can’t plan something that far in advance – – – neither of the above is my situation – i was on mount marcy (ny’s 5344’highpoint) last year 9/11 for a group called “cops on top” – cops on top was also on mount washington on 9/11 last year as they were the previous year and will probably be again this year(info at http://www.copsontop.com/0203/sept2003climbs.htm ) – i would have loved to do south kinsman again this year (a great mountain with great views) but i feel that since the most lives were lost in n.y. it should not be left to chance that someone else would do mt. marcy this year (since i had four guys wanting to do it with me and i ended up going alone on 9/11).

                  more 4000′ & sub peaks

                  >>>I think this should be item #1. We should definitely open up sub-peaks to coverage. The more flags the better. We should start a list.<<<

since new hampshire’s 4000 footers are 100% covered ofor 9/11 now… we do have a few other state highpoints surrounding and near new hampshire, it would probably be nice to have a “confirmed” flag flying from some of them also as a result of the momentum of this event.

                    >>Another related item that comes to mind is the adoption of an official logo to be used on any future patches, etc.<< it would make the patches less expensive per patch since you would be ordering a larger quantity, but… a new patch every once in awhile would make it more interesting.

i would like to come and meet some of the other participants (the only other i have met so far is from n.kinsman) – may 8th sounds like a good date for a meeting since the bugs aren’t flying yet – – – – – as much as i would like to cover s.kinsman again for flags on the 48 2004 (a great mountain with great views and also my 115th 4000 footer)… i think that since saturday is 9/11 in 2004 i should make sure new yorks highpoint is covered, but i will come over to NH late saturday if anything is going on saturday evening or sunday morning – – – – – but i do hope to be in NH for flags on the 48 2005 to do s.kinsman saturday and go to cover mt. marcy, NY sunday.

i left home at 4:30am got to trailhead at 9:30am – summited south kinsman at 12:20 – stayed till 1:50 – reached parking area 4:30 got home at 10:30 (with a supper at bickfords at exit 26 in mass.). was nice to be on another mountain summit with a nice view and the flag again 2 days later ( see 9/11/3 http://www.copsontop.com/0203/sept2003climbs.htm ) wish i could do the flags on the 48 again next year but if cops on top are doing the state highpoints again on 9/11/4 (saturday) i will be on mt. marcy again since that is the state that where all the firefighters and police officers were killed so i think it should be covered (in 2002 no one went up marcy, i wish i had known about it, i would have gone)

                          Mt. Kinsman South
                          Hiked up alone
I used two hiking poles lashed together – this worked so well on mount marcy on thursday that there was no need to try anything else on saturday (except that marcy had no trees like s.kinsman, on marcy i strapped my backpack upside down to a cairn and lashed the flag to the backpack)
improvement: i would have liked to know about the get togeather at the end that i saw mentioned on this board – also i think 9/11 is on saturday nexy year – i’m not sure how many of this years participants will be doing thier own thing for 9/11 next year (i did — see http://www.copsontop.com) so maybe next year it should be on a sunday for a better chance of participation? i know i will be back any year that it isn’t on 9/11.
