in reply to: Nashua Telegraph #53148
Wow, Oh my God!!
The front page of the telegraph is incredible! What a picture up top Jefferson! The online pic does no justice: this is a 3/4 page photo on the front page. I will run out and buy 20 copies if anyone wants- its great!Excellent coverage!in reply to: South Carter needs HELP! #53053Perfect- I’ll be in touch with him!
in reply to: South Carter needs HELP! #53051I am glad to accept the mission of taking the flag to South Carter. I do have a flag from my school, but since I was not originally planning to hoist a flag, I’ll need some help with a “pole structure”. Looking at the gallery photos of South Carter last year, I don’t think I’ll be able to compete with their spectacular propping and hoisting of the flag over trees. (How’d they do that?)If anyone can offer some help, I would appreciate it so much. I will be at KOA Friday night – with Ruby, my lab – but probably won’t arrive until 9:00-ish.
in reply to: Hancock Campground #49369Hey Magic – is Ghost Dog coming on the hike? I might be bringing a mutt and was wondering….. OK see ya there!
in reply to: Hancock Campground #49368OK – 9:00 you are leaving from the trailhead. I’ll see you there, then. Cool.
in reply to: Hancock Campground #49361Hey its me. I am not able to attend the meeting – bummer – but now it looks like, babysitter permitting that is – I could join you guys on Sunday. Tell me when you are planning on heading up the Hancocks on Sunday, I would love to meet up with you. Hey Magic- got my pics back from Tom-F-W. Awesome!!! I can be at the campground by 10:00.
in reply to: Planning Meeting Registrations now open! #49397Hi everyone, Me -also off exit 5W in the bustling metropolis of Nash. I cannot make the night of the 26th. It is my daughter’s dance recital and I can’t miss that. I will check in though as the news becomes available. I can’t wait to do my 3rd year also…really looking forward to it. :flag:
in reply to: My Thoughts on Today’s Event! #49036Me and my friend Dawna started the morning at the Osceola trail head around 9:00. Many hikers coming down the trail wondered about the “bag pipes” sticking out of my pack! When we reached the summit of Osceola first, a few hikers at the summit had been awaiting the arrival of the flag. This was really neat, but I explained I was headed over to East Osceola. “You better get moving then! Its almost time!” When we reached the summit of East, I couldn’t decide if I should hang the flag on the summit or at a better lookout post. I scrambled out to the lookout off to the west, and rigged up the pole to the tallest tree I could get to. A very nice man stopped to help us , as we had to pass the flag out to this rock ledge over some bushes and shorter trees. Many hikers stopped to ask questions and just say Thank you. It was wonderful to talk to people, and hear their reflections . I handed out the mission statement also.
Other hikers came through remarking that our flag was very visible from Osceola, however around 1:00, the fog rolled in thick! We caught glimpses of red, white and blue on Osceola. We did not get over to Osceola in time to see the flag there.
We later stopped in twin mountain for much needed shower! Then headed to the Mooseland Grill to meet up with familiar faces and some new ones. It was nice to meet Mtn Magic, and the8re! Before my meal, I read over some of the passages from the notebook Little Bear had on Jefferson. This was a wonderful idea…it brought the whole meaning back down to earth for me.
Thank you to everyone organizing the event! Greg, the8re and Frodo! I will be there in 2004 – and maybe like Cathy and Silent Cal, will make my “48” on that date. Pictures will be coming soon, but I had a disposal digital camera and the disk takes a few days – bummer. Go tohttp://www.nashuatelegraph.com/Main.asp?SectionID
for a wonderful story on Elizabeth Kovalcin, the story is titled “Leaning Forward”.
in reply to: Peak count (2003) #49073Ok , we did Osceola East on 9/13, there were 2 of us. My flag pole was a 6 piece aluminum sectional from my screen room . The flag was rigged up using an elaborate system of bungi-cords, pony til holders and some nylon shoe-laces .
Suggestions? Only that it would be nice to really have good coverage. I hope that people saw the wonderful FRONT PAGE story in the Nashua Telegraph on Elizabeth Kovalcin on Osceola. The story was beautifully written. The Telegraph has been a great source in geting this story out, and I give them credit.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill Tally #48933From E Osceola, expect between 3-5. Also, word has gotten out, so I know of a few hikers who are heading up to “see” the event, and may go there too. But for this group , about 5. can’t wait!!!Hoping for great weather – did Garfield today, what a great day – one like this would be perfect! 😀
in reply to: Post-event gathering #48872Last time I was up in Twin Mountain we ate at a cool place right on 302, It was a fairly big establishment and served everything from burgers to steak. It was called The Black Moose, or something like that. (The “Big Dumb Moose”)
I just can’t remember. Anyone know what I’m talking about? There is also The Sunset Grille in Campton, or once again Woodstock Brewery. Or maybe get 2 places to meet – one in N. Conway area, and one on the other side, say in Lincoln. I think a lot depends on wether or not people are leaving the area after the hike, or if they are staying the night of the 13th. 8)in reply to: Post-event gathering #48870Hey everyone! last year’s post-celebration was a lot of fun! It was great to hear the stories, and which flags could be spotted. I know for me, it made me feel connected to all of you out there with the same committment in mind. We should at least Offer a similar type of get-together spot, something more centrally located. Last year it was in Woodstock – maybe something smack dab in the middle of the hites. Now where would that be?
in reply to: celebrating after flags on the 48 ? #48686Hi!
Just to alleviate any anxieties, I contacted the Woodstock Inn/Brewery tonight on the phone. One of the managers said he was aware of the Flags Event. Out of a “duty to warn”…I told him it had been suggested for some of us to meet up afterward at the Brewery. “No Problem”, came the response. They are fully staffed, have the room, and are prepared to handle whatever comes their way. SOOOOOO – I am really looking forward to doing the climb….I am so excited! Leaving tomorrow after work. I will be on top of Cannon along with my “crew” and our flag will be waving proudly. Afterward, I am looking forward to meeting many of you in Woodstck!
Be Safe Everyone..See you there! 😀in reply to: celebrating after flags on the 48 ? #48671When all is said and done, I for one will be at Woodstock Inn for a cold brew. I beleive the rest of my group will probably opt for that as well. Look for us..I will wear a T-shirt of my school colors – red/white and blue! See you late in the day! 🙂
in reply to: celebrating after flags on the 48 ? #48668HI! We will be doing Cannon MT. on the 14th, and I for one would enjoy meeting up afterward to “cap off” the day’s events. Maybe people chose a good centrally located place, this could be accomplished. Anyone participating could go if they like, but shouldn’t feel they have to. Any suggestions? Woodstock Inn/Brewery? I suppose we should consider ‘large scale’. Count me in.
