Go to the shelter before you do West Bond. It’s a short distance from the shelter spur to the summit spur along the Bondcliff Trail. Claim your spot and settle in, and just take a light pack up West Bond for sunset, which on Sat 9/10/05 will be 7:06pm.

I have the entire weekend and Monday off and would like to bag the Bonds while I’m up there, weather permitting.

In that case, I would go for two nights at Guyot Shelter. Start up from Lincoln Woods wicked early Saturday morning and head over Bondcliff and Bond, then relax at Guyot. Sunday fly the flag over and Zealand, enjoy the open views of Mt. Guyot, and catch the sunset on West Bond. Monday morning head back out.

        Weather permitting. 😉

While you would be missed the previous evening, I’d head up early Saturday afternoon and spend the night at Ethan Pond in the shelter or on the tent platforms (thus the need to get to this popular spot early in the afternoon). That gets all that elevation gain out of the way. When you start in the morning it’s entirely level all the way to the Zeacliff Trail; you’ll fly all the way to that trail (and you will LOVE coming out on Whitewall). It does cost to stay at Ethan Pond, a nominal price, so in the morning clear off the platform and stash all your stuff, taking just a day pack with the flag up to the summit.

If you’ve got the cars, leave some at the northern end of the Carter-Moriah Trail. Going up Stony Brook is a fine route, then continue north to come down over Mt. Surprise. That makes for a really nice overall trip.

If you’re in the Boston area, there is a wonderful flag store on Mass Ave in East Arlington. If anyone wants a more detailed address I’ll have to drive or bicycle by. 🙂

Ooooh. I would LOVE to fly the flag on a summit like Abraham or Camel’s Hump. Gorgeous peaks, especially in September. But soooooo far away from everyone else. 🙁

Sounds fun to me – I just have to head up Rte 128 in the morning to get to work, where we have showers.

As long as I’m not the only one, out in the woods alone…

A helium tank has been hiked to the summit of Moosilauke before … George Fitch hiked one up for Sarah’s (Sherpa John’s fiancee) 48th.

Hmm …. 13-18lbs wouldn’t be bad, actually. End up with about a 30lb pack, it’d be just like backpacking.

Woo-hoo … West Bond has been claimed!

I’m still surprised nobody’s on the Hancocks. Well, one of the Hancocks, anyway.

I tried to get Sherpa John to take Owl’s Head, since he’s done it 4 times this year and loves going back, but he declined. 🙂

At least with no after-gathering to miss, I won’t feel too bad if I do get a long-haul peak.

                          LoL! Enjoy!

Madison’s still up for grabs; that’s a sweet peak and the hut will still be open if one wanted to hike up the previous evening.

Speaking of which … did anyone mention to Madison that they rescheduled the bridge work for this year? 🙂

I can’t believe nobody’s taken Carrigain yet! I would have expected that to be one of the first. I’m equally surprised about the Hancocks … they usually disappear right at the start.

Owl’s Head and West Bond are still there … sigh. C’mon people, don’t make me walk there!

Gee, Magic, will Ghostdog be able to handle an influx of multiple dogs that day?

Is this the Kaya I know or does the universe hold more than one Kaya? 🙂

Yeah, by September I’ll have just about gotten the smoke smell out of everything so it’ll be time for one of Magic’s fires to reodorize my gear. 🙂

Aww, man, you’ve missed too much already! How about we dose you up with caffeine at the end of the evening? It’s what, 90 minutes for you to get home from there?
