in reply to: Planning weekend 2005 #50576
I’d definitely be up for a get-together like last year. Mind bug season when picking a time in June, of course. 😀
in reply to: Dusting off the cobwebs #50600I’m back. It was an … interesting … November and December and January was kind of a cleanup time, but all is well again. 😀
in reply to: No press coverage this year? #50484Do you have a link to the inner frame page? That link doesn’t take me anywhere helpful. 🙁
in reply to: 2005 Flags on the 48 #50522I think only one day is appropriate, although anyone is welcome to fly a flag on their own on any summit at any time of any day. My preference is 9/11 for 2005. The question for the future is: how much do we allow the availability of hikers to affect the memorial? It’s a “9/11 Memorial Hike” … without hikers, it’s not much of a hike. Too far from 9/11, and its meaning is diminished.
Personally, I like the weekend because I come up the night before and stay the night after. I may even backpack again for the day before. But even if it were only a day trip, many people just don’t have that kind of vacation time available to them to take the day off. This is important not only for the participants carrying the flags up, but for those other hikers going up to witness the flags, who want to see the memorial.
And … school will have just started. A weekday will rule out attendance by anyone of school age.
With respect to my comment about keeping it nonconflicting with the VFTT Gathering, obviously the 11th is the 11th. It’s just that if we were choosing between the weekend before and the weekend after, a 50:50 decision, then keep VFTT’s weekend in mind.
in reply to: 2005 Flags on the 48 #50506Whatever does not conflict with the VFTT Gathering. We gain a lot of hikers by avoiding that weekend, which is set around Darren’s birthday.
in reply to: 2005 Gathering Planning #50501I don’t actually think that’s true. I would imagine many people would want private rooms for themselves & spouses, or the 4-person rooms for their groups, simply based on observation this year. Anyone who took a motel room anywhere would go for that.
The bunkhouses would primarily entice people who would otherwise camp, IMO.
in reply to: T-Shirts and Pens #50362Jaytrek57 is the man with the t-shirts. He was taking sizes and email addresses for orders. I emailed him with a pointer back to this thread.
in reply to: How much did you spend? #50405Hmm … I had a beer, two sodas, and a burger/fries platter, and I tipped well (because other than having to order at the bar I did, in fact, get excellent service), but I don’t remember how much that was. Probably in the $20-$25 range.
in reply to: Time to pay the piper #50386Unfortunately, that would make for very bad PR.
If we do the group thing for post-hike next year, with a set rate per person, we could scrape a little off the top there to cover the web site expenses.
in reply to: Time to pay the piper #50384I’m certainly willing to donate a significant amount. I do like the idea of the “supporters” page, too. We could have fun with the titles, much like the post count titles.
in reply to: It’s official!!! All 48 were covered!!! #50371Woo-hoo! Way to go, everyone!!!!!!!!!
in reply to: Site Traffic #50370So far, 16734 total pages have been served in September 2004. The page counts for 10th, 11th, 12th are 2156, 1303, and 2839, respectively.
The number of unique sites has gone up every day, and last measured was on the 12th at 411.
I can’t wait to see this week’s stats…
in reply to: Feedback on the Mooseland #50354I think the biggest thing would have been another server dedicated to just taking orders from one location. I was lucky enough to get attention at the end of the bar and get my order taken down. Several others did, too (you may have heard wait staff shout out names as food came out). But this was not at all organized and unfortunate.
We made them a ton of money this year. Whether that would have any sway for next year or not is uncertain.
Overall, though, I think it’s time for something different. Based on the name tags, I’d say 100 people came through there. If next year has as strong a turnout, the banquet-room-at-a-ski area idea becomes the better option, IMO.
in reply to: Thank you, participants #50329Unfortunately, I only did two rounds with the zoom lens, one just after noon and another around 1:30. I heard that some other summit folks saw it but the message didn’t get to me in time while I was up there…
I myself really need to push the thanks for organizing over to Stephen. He did a TON of work for this event and it really came out the way it did thanks to him!
