in reply to: Question on Participation #49801
This was great to come back and see – huge thanks to you both for your participation and accomodation of each other!
in reply to: Where do we go this year? #49527Greg just had checked with several ski areas; however, they all would treat it as an event (like a wedding reception) with payment up front, etc., so we nixed the idea.
in reply to: Featured Flag Photo #49760Very cool, though some are very much not flag fotos!
😀in reply to: Summit Journal #49707I’d put it on the book. If there are enough people on the summit, the book will be passed around, and someone may receive it before ever reading any other notice.
in reply to: Forum Updates #49757I like the journals forum! Will that also be where we replicate entries from the books out on the peaks?
in reply to: Summit Journal #49703given the option to remain anonymous
Well, they could do that simply by not writing their names along with their note.
I think simply stating clearly on the book’s cover that its contents may be “reproduced and/or published” is adequate. People can then adjust what they do or don’t feel comfortable writing as appropriate. I do not want to get us into the business of determining which entries we can or cannot reproduce based on a check mark.
That way there is an implicit expectation that anyone anywhere may read what is written, much like the log books in the huts.
in reply to: Where is everyone staying that weekend? #49744Once we decide if the post-gathering is north or south of the Notch, I will be grabbing a motel. Posh, I know.
😀in reply to: Summit Signs #49710Excellent. Last year I printed mine out and for $1 had it laminated at Staples. I then punched a hole and used a cord to tether it to one of my flagpole guy lines so anyone could read it easily.
I seem to remember an old posting talking about the wrongness of the date in the photo…
😀“White House” should not be quoted.
And one other thing – it bothered me last year to say “a horrific terrorist attack on September 11, 2001” … I really think that as a historic event, it should be “the horrific terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001″
in reply to: Summit Journal #49695I think it’s a great idea. We can collect all the journals at the after-gathering, then distribute them to those of us with scanners. I can do a considerable amount of the scanning if it can wait until October (after my 48th).
in reply to: Posting the Event Announcement to Other Forums #49647BTW – I hesitated on posting to VFTT because we had half of all the peaks gone before we ever even went “official” and the rest shortly thereafter. I decided to wait until we had our “supporting” story together before referring people over here, and it sounds like that’s getting reasonably finalized, so I’ll do a post early next week when I get back from Maine (Baldpates and Table Rock this weekend).
Have a good one, all!
(and ps – yes, I’m welcoming people to join me on Garfield and help out / be there / carry stuff 🙂 )
in reply to: Backup teams #49688I agree with Terry.
Oh, wait … wrong website.
in reply to: Almost halfway! #49663The Avalon Trail starts out climbing moderately to the A-Z junction. From there it goes up a very steep section, albeit with nice steps. This lasts just about until you can’t stand it any more, then it levels out and passes Mt. Avalon’s summit side trail. From there it’s a very nice walk across a small ridgecrest and into a shallow sag, before another moderate but not bad climb up to the Field summit. From there it’s an easy walk (not unlike Starr King to Waumbek) over to Willey.
Take your time on that first stretch and I think you’ll be fine. Bring plenty of water, there’s none up there.
in reply to: Almost halfway! #49661Maybe we really do need to try and get some “on call” people together on Friday night.
One big question – who is the central arbiter of last-minute cancellations? Someone going to be watching the web site right up until starting time?
BTW – to avoid one possible last-minute failure, let’s make sure “dirt_girl” knows that Zealand Road is scheduled to be closed.
in reply to: Posting the Event Announcement to Other Forums #4964561 people hit my little hiking web site? That’s pretty scary!
in reply to: Posting the Event Announcement to Other Forums #49637I haven’t yet. Being away much of last weekend (hiked Kinsman Ridge from Rte 112 up to the Whitehouse lot) I haven’t had the chance to compose something.
