in reply to: Time to start the Thank You’s… #49106
There’s really nothing I can say that isn’t already said above, so I’ll just throw my voice in as hugely appreciative of all the work done by the organizers, and of all the effort of the hikers. I am definitely proud of this event and of my part in it. I had a personally vested interest as well and it felt good to stand up at the perpetrators of 9/11; I hope I helped others to feel the same way.
Next year I’m staying closer to the road so I can get there in time to actually meet and thank you in person! Max – West Bond will be available next year. 😉
in reply to: Still need confirmation (2003) #49154Out on West Bond, we didn’t have the greatest binoculars, but it sure looked like there was a flag up on Garfield. At the very least, something pole-like was up there at one point; maybe just a tall, skinny hiker climbing the cairn.
in reply to: Domain Name #49098Let me know if any of that doesn’t work out. I host my own domain on my own hardware with my own DNS on my own connection, so can pretty much do whatever I want, given the limitation that it’s run out of my home so any DSL or electrical service flakiness (or hardware failures) could crop up at any time.
in reply to: Peak count (2003) #49055Peak Name: West Bond
Short description of rigging and pole system: 3 – 4′ lengths of 3/4″ PVC guyed with nylon rope
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional):
So far so good! My only thoughts would be how to get the word out to still more people:
Leave a mission statement at some facilities (Pinkham, Highland, the Huts) sometime in advance for people to see.
Leave a mission statement (with a “this will be removed” note on it so nobody thinks we’re littering) at the appropriate trailheads on the day of the event.
And if we can get more than 48 groups signed up, add some of the popular and visible but not official summits, like Hight, Guyot, & Little Haystack.in reply to: Photos are up! #49044And I added my shots of West Bond. Hopefully someone else has a shot of West from Bond or Bondcliff?
😀in reply to: My Thoughts on Today’s Event! #49030My friend Jenifer and I, after a Friday night stay at Guyot, got up to West Bond around 11:30am on Saturday. I was surprised at how warm it was up there, with just the shallowest of breezes. Up on the summit I found our friends John and June who we’d met a Guyot, another gentleman, and much to my shock and pleasant surprise, my coworker Tova and her husband Ron! What a great treat.
It was hot up there, with just a bit of a breeze. I quickly got the flag together and everyone helped my work out the guy lines. We looked around and between naked eyes and my small binoculars could see flags flying on Bondcliff, Carrigain, South Twin, Garfield, Lafayette, Lincoln, and Liberty!
Just past noon we gathered around to sing the national anthem, then relaxed and talked. A little after one o’clock, watching the clouds pour over Franconia Ridge and the Sandwich range, I decided that, given the 8+ mile slog back to the car, I had to disassemble a bit early. I met a number of people on the trail who had seen the flag from Bond or Bondcliff and were thrilled and thankful. The public knowledge of this year’s event was much more widespread than last year, and it felt great every time I’d see someone on the trail, and they’d recognize the flag bandanna on my head and the poles on my pack.
We didn’t even get back to the car until 7:15, just in time to not need headlamps, and I’m sorry to have missed so many who’d already left the Mooseland. But it was great to meet Jay and SilentCal and the folks who were still there.
Thanks to my friend Jenifer for helping out, and to the organizers, and to everyone who participated. We done good.
🙂in reply to: Day Hiking or Base Camping/Backpacking? #48975And I’m northward bound to start my extended hike … see you Saturday at the Mooseland!
😀in reply to: I’m out. :( #48991It sounds like she’s responding – that’s good news, and I’m glad. Prayers and best wishes … you’ll be missed!
That ripped, tattered flag needs to go. I know many who would find a flag in that condition utterly offensive, and I agree that it doesn’t belong there permanently.
I like what we do – our two hours then no trace.
in reply to: 12 more peaks to cover (2003) #48966Bondcliff would be incredibly fun to do. Get ahold of a huge flag and just hang it off the section of cliff that’s in the cover photograph of the new WMG. No pole necessary. I hope someone jumps in!
in reply to: Day After Event Hike ???? #48957Thanks for the offer – I’ll be with some friends, accompanying another friend on her 47th and 48th. Weather looks iffy for Sunday so my fingers will be crossed!
in reply to: Day Hiking or Base Camping/Backpacking? #48971We’re making a trip out of it. Thursday night at Zealand Hut and Friday night up at Guyot. That way, we can both climb Hale and my hiking partner can see Zealand, Bond, and Bondcliff (all of which I summitted last winter).
Saturday night at a location not yet determined, and Sunday I’ll accompany another friend for her 47th and 48th.
Monday I soak my feet.
Jaytrek – I’m using 3/4″ PVC pipe, in 4-foot segments. It’s very flexible at that size, but I’ve reinforced the connections with steel bolts which double as anchors for the all-important guy ropes which will hold the whole thing in place. Cable ties will connect the 5’x3′ flag itself.
Home Depot or a garden/yard supply store should also have a variety of lightweight aluminum poles – as long as it’s collapsible.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill Tally #489262 people (myself and a hiking friend) will definitely be there.
Probably between 7:00 and 7:30, I’ve got one of the longer treks.
Don’t drink the place dry before I get there!
😀in reply to: Post-event gathering #48880Greg,
Can you add an option to the poll for “Any of these are fine, I’ll be there”? I haven’t been to most of them so I shouldn’t offer an opinion…
