Flag on Bond as seen from Mt. Carrigain

http://www.saletnik.org/gallery2/v/hiking/fot48/fot48-2010/IMG_7729.jpg.htmlThis was a year for me to simply tag along and take photos, being a bit busy getting ready for next weekend’s nuptials. Jeremy organized the group while Mark undertook engineering and construction. Mother Nature cooperated by providing an absolutely stellar day. It was cold when we first summited around 11am, I wore a down jacket and wool cap while atop the tower and was still cold, but it soon warmed up, the wind lessened to a breeze, and flags were visible for miles in all directions. I was able to pick out N & S Hancock, Bondcliff, Bond, Garfield, West Bond, and possibly S Twin, Lafayette, and Lincoln. We even had a fly-by, from what we believe was an immature bald eagle.
I got up in 3 hours, not far behind the rest of the group (I hope!). Sabrina got a much later start and topped out in an impressive 2:20. We all made it down in 2 hours, rehydrated & socialized, then hit Moat Mountain for ribs and refreshments.
It was a day of friends, fun, seriousness, solemnity, joy, sadness, and remembrance. As always, I give thanks that my parents’ flight out of Logan never took off that morning. My full photo album is at http://www.saletnik.org/gallery2/v/hiking/fot48/fot48-2010/
I’m trying to get some of the photos onto the gallery here, but it’s vexing me. Grr…
in reply to: Anyone have a successful peak count yet? #54389Awe-some.
in reply to: 2010: Dates to remember #54398The creative side of me loves it.
The forest and mountain ethics side of me says it’s wrong.in reply to: 2010: Dates to remember #54396@SilentCal wrote:
Brian actually had a great idea that we talked about on our last hike. Mt. Liberty should get a good sized flag up for the whole weekend. From Saturday morning until Monday Morning.
Keep in mind that it’s improper flag etiquette to have it flying in the dark unless it is lit. We’d need to take it down each night and re-fly each morning.
Given that we won’t be taking the flag down until 2pm and there are numerous post-event BBQs to attend, we may not try to do Adams. In that case, given the nice forecast we’ll probably head back on the Watson Path directly from the summit. Either way, we can all decide once we’re up there; descent doesn’t need to be done as a group, too.
in reply to: Owl’s Head #54344Anyone who accompanies you who wants to count the peak towards their NH 48 4000-footers patch cannot use a bike, but of course anyone simply going along for the hike are more than welcome to bike to the bridge at the Wilderness boundary.
Just want to make sure there are no unfortunate misunderstandings!
Start time is no later than 7:15am. If everyone who is signed up is at the trailhead at 7, we’ll go then. 🙂
It’s a 3:40 book time to get to the hut, and we won’t do much faster since Air Line has its steep portions, but it’s worth it given the spectacular views into King Ravine from up high. Air Line cutoff over to the hut for a quick stop then up to the summit. If enough people are interested we may head over to Adams before going down.
In case of bad weather we’ll just do Valley Way up and back.
in reply to: 2009 Handout Cards #54309Despite the “2006” in the link, the cards do not have any year printed on them. 🙂
in reply to: how do you become the primary contact for a peak? #54284What was the exact wording of the error, do you recall?
in reply to: Wooded Summits #54270Please bring back photos of your “construction” to share in the gallery – we’d love to see what you end up doing. 🙂
in reply to: Owl’s Head #54166Boo-yeah, thanks Jay!
in reply to: 2009 Flags dates #54160Next year I’ll have cards to hand out to people ahead of time to hand out on their peaks.
I did post a .pdf to these forums last week, though, for anyone who wanted to print their own. I’m sorry for anyone to have missed that.
