Oh yes, need to add info about what participants are supposed to do (and not supposed to do!) Such as, “Raise your flag at noon and fly it for 2 hours.” (? is that the time and duration we agreed on ?) Leave no trace info, such as, “Do not leave your flag on the mountain, etc.”
Anything else?
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48622Thanks, Frodo.
Tony and I have marked it on our Calendar. I think I can round up a few more hikers, too.
in reply to: URL for Web site? #48604I agree with Frodo:
http://flags.alpinezone.com/in reply to: Enthusiasm #48619I’ve been off the board for a while, due to layoff from work and not having internet access! I’m glad to see there’s still discussion going on about the event. And I’ll be there.
in reply to: When do we officially launch this event? #48594I agree, we should launch no earlier than 5 or 6 months before the event. We will have too many no-shows otherwise—people who’s initial enthusiasm wanes.
Plus, after winter is over the 3-season hikers get excited about hiking again. But 5-6 months is early enough so people can pre-plan (i.e. set aside a day or two of vacation time)
in reply to: The name of the event #48537I vote for Flags on the 48. It sums it up well.
I tried the poll, but it wouldn’t work for me.
in reply to: How do we organize this whole thing? #48566Yes, this plan sounds very logical and manageable. I agree.
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48555I think it sounds great, and I really have nothing to add.
in reply to: The name of the event #48524How about “From Every Mountain Top: 9-11 Memorial Hike”. This may give us some flexibility in case we don’t make our goal of 48, or to remove the association with the peak baggers.
in reply to: The Mission Statement #48549Should we have some brief explanation as to why/how we are connecting this event to the 48 peaks? Maybe something about hikers getting together to show a sign of unity? Or is it unnecessary to explain the significance of the 48? I guess I am mostly throwing this suggestion out there in response to all that nonsense on Hiker Journal a couple weeks ago.
in reply to: Raise other nations’ flags? #48514I can see allowing people to fly other flags on summits in addition to the American flag, but not in place of it. Yes, 20% of the victims were from other countries, but the main target was to kill Americans on US soil. I think it’s fine and appropriate to acknowledge these other countries, but not at the cost of downplaying or denying patriotism for our own country.
in reply to: Setting the Date (was: I’ll start) #48501Then I think this thread should be retitled “setting the date” or something, because I did not know it was exclusively for that purpose, as it hadn’t started out that way.
in reply to: Setting the Date (was: I’ll start) #48499First, they are really scaring me over on HJ!
Second, I see a valid point for the Wednesday date, for both reasons stated by RJ. By using the actual anniversary date the event would be very powerful and meaningful. And because it’s a Wednesday we would really only attract people who are sincerely interested.
Third, what do you all think of this idea of raising flags from other nations?
in reply to: Setting the Date (was: I’ll start) #48496Some of the 48’s are more easily attained via backpacking trips, so maybe Saturday, Sept. 14th would work better logistically. People may be able to take a Friday off and hike in for the next day.
