in reply to: FOT48 Planning Get-together Date #49268
Greg,
Since you locked it accidentlly, instead of a day, how about giving it a whole week for the folks to vote.
For the good of the event!
in reply to: Agenda for get-together #49286Isn’t the kickoff date June 26 at Hancock campground as decided in our 2 polls?!

Lots to talk over!in reply to: FOT48 Planning Get-together Date #49265Way early in the year for many to commit 4/5 months in advance.
They will attend when and were the rest of us do.
We know there are many more interested.
Of course no date/place is perfect for everyone.
Aka: the silent majority.
Money back if not satisfied is not guarenteed!

We will do it!in reply to: FOT48 Planning Get-together Location #49278So folks know the difference, Lafayette in the late spring offers showers at $.25 per current time unit. Hancock is open all year and plowed. Off the Kanc is a shorter drive for those coming up from the South. Lots of sites at Lafayette are not level and are a bit sloped. Both (last year’s prices) are the same.
in reply to: FOT48 Planning Get-together Date #49262My favorite time outdoors during the early part of the year is April and early May. Snow and ice remains on the mtns. Warm days, cool nights — perfect for hiking, camping, and my favorite — sitting around the campfire after a hard day of hiking! The valleys and the rest of the land up here see “mud season.” No bugs! About the middle of May the state bird hatches.
Late May to mid June is the worst, bug wise. They all hatch and are starving. Moist leaves are not sufficent enough. We and all animals are part of their food chain. Moose are the smartest animals. They spend their days submerged right up to their eyes. Watch out though — they move around in the dark and are most difficult to see!
If the end of June heats up, like it *sometimes* does, the hot weather dimimishes the population. If it is just warm, damp, and rainy, gosh do they multiply. Btw working in the garden, even in direct sun, the smell of the earth and us (C02) excites the bugs to the point where you just give up. We stay indoors to avoid the masses.
There will be bugs at the end of June, less then the middle of the month, a lot less than the early part of the month. The secret is 3 or more days of 90 degree temps to dehydrate the life out of them.
Late April/ Early May sees absolutely no bugs. Unless super hot, dry weather
hatches them early. A delicate balance of nature.

I vote for late April/ Early May. No bugs!in reply to: FOT48 Planning Get-together Date #49260There’s plenty of water around the land of the East Branch of the Pemi. Based on many years of living here, the black flies hatch during the second week of May. By June the Mosquistos hatch too. They both are very hungry and one requires netting, unless the winds are brisk or there is cold weather.
The locals have always said that 90% of the insects are gone when there are 3 or more days of 90 degree weather. That’s why they are not so bad by July 4.
I rather be camping, hiking in the woods, and around a campfire without the bugs!
in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49246I knew May 8 was the day before Mother’s Day. Why not met for a brainstorming night and we all leave early to visit mom?! It still is a few days before the black flies hatch. Later in the year will see many more campers and the possibility of less sites. Haven’t heard from the ladies. C’mon, let’s put it together. Share your thoughts!

What do the ladies of the forums think?in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49237We can get plenty of sites near each other. I’m sure it will not be a busy (campground full) weekend. Here’s the big question, I do not have a pickup truck, I will bring logs in my trunk. Can anyone else bring some big logs?!

Share your ideas!in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49233Btw: at $18, you are allowed have a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles allowed per site. At the Hancock there 56 wooded sites, each with a picnic table, fireplace, and tent pad. I can bring some good logs. I could bring a half cord if I had a pick-up truck.

So let’s get down to it. Where to meet. Where to camp. I agree a poll may be best.

Lotsa flag waving this year, Greg. A wink and a waving flag, super. We’re getting right into it!
So let us talk up some ideas! Meet to discuss the FOT48 at the Hancock C.G, on the Kanc about 7 miles from 93. $18 a site, flush toilets, open all year. FMI:

So what are your ideas?!in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49225I’m all for camping right off a paved road. May sees the mud season before the bugs hatch. Let’s look into Hancock off the Kanc which is a fine level graded area.
Yes Max is right, postholing is certain on the trails in the beginning of May.

Thanks to wool to keep one warm!in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49215Compared to every year, there will be plenty of well-packed snow and ice above 3k’ in early May in the Northern Whites. Crampons will be still be a necessity for several to many more weeks. Especially if the trail faces the northside. You will see snow/ice 2 feet thick, strong spring winds, and even a snowstorm or two! Even if it is 70 degrees or more in the valleys. Oh, and no bugs on the snow/ice covered slopes.

May sees plenty of winter left in the Whites.in reply to: Flags on the 48 Planning Get-together #49199You can most definitely can count on us. Heck, I’ll bring extra food, tons of firewood, many ideas, and plenty of energy. (Not to cut this fine winter short, but is it May, yet!) Can’t wait — it’ll be a blast.

“Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country.” – Anais Ninin reply to: Looking back…Moving forward #49185Yes, a planning party. I would love a camping weekend, snow’s gone under 3k’, early May, no bugs (none!), hike all day — camp all night :), tossing out ideas as a group, fine tuning the details while sitting around the cracking of a campfire, cooking, having a cold one (or two!) w/o the worry of having to drive. I’m looking forward to it. How do you feel? What are your thoughts?

Sounds perfect to me!in reply to: Looking back…Moving forward #49177Great tentative date to meet in the Whites as those very hungry black flies will attack a few days later. This is based on years of the average conditions during springtime.
C’mon, let’s hear from the others.
Super ideas! -
