They are planning on coming up that same trail. One in our group is not coming and I’m going to be at Lake of the clouds hut on the 10th. Normally I carry a extending paint pole and a flag. I’d be happy to fly other colors, a gatsen or MIA flag if anyone has one. In addition to what you folks are bringing.
The Hut should have water available, I’m staying in it the night of the 10th and they will be spending most of that day getting it ready for the late season. What I can do is bring a bunch of empty milk or water jugs and fill em up for you guys for when you get there if that works.

in reply to: Mt. Zealand #54362Hey everyone. I think Shawn covered most of it. It was an overcast day but we managed to get started about 8 AM after staying in the Zealand hut the previous night. This was also my first stay in the hut as well. The Croo at the hut was top notch. Hillary, Ben & Andrew not only made a great couple of meals but were entertaining and very humorous. I will definitely stay at a hut again.
So we ventured out at 8 AM and there was no real time to warm up it was straight up, non stop for 1000 feet of stone steps. Now had I actually hiked anything other than Mt. Blue Jobe this year (which really doesn’t count) the climb would have seemed moderate. Instead I struggled up it stopping every 100 feet of climb or so.
Once we finished the stairway to heaven we found the first lookout and the group that stayed at the hut the previous evening. Here we took a 15 min break and chatted with the folks. Next we walked what seemed like a mile of ridge. It was great, nothing like ridge walking and views to lift you up when you are tired.
We reached a false peak at about 11 and decided to have lunch. We then proceeded on and made Zealand peak at 12:03 and had the flag flying by 12:07 & again by 12:14. One of out tie wraps malfunctioned & we had to bring it down and Macgyver it back up there.
As Shawn said we had a few visitors on the peak and many others we passed on the way down asking about the event and us. We invited them all to sign up next year and join us. Craig and I made it out to the car by 5:30 and were off as Shawn stayed back to enjoy the hut croo one last evening.
Hey Shawn,
I’ve coordinated a peak each of the past two years but this is a first with someone other than those I typically hike with.
Craig and I are hiking up to the hut Friday and plan to summit Zealand from the hut on Saturday. We normaly bring a painters pole and flag with tie wraps.
I am battling a medical issue this week so I’m hoping that I don’t have to bail last min. I’ll keep you posted.

in reply to: Wooded Summits #54271Hi,
We did twin North in 07 and we flew the flags on an over look near the peak. In 08 we did Galehead completely covered.
Both years we have used painters poles that extend to double length and are light enough to carry up the mountain. Find a nice thin tree and tie wrap the hell out of it to the tree. Nice thing is most painters polls have a key loop on bottom and you can tie wrap old glory to it and the pole.
Extend it up til you are above tree line. The pics for galehead have disappeared in the gallery for some reason.

2008 Mt Galeheadin reply to: Ideas for 2008 #53922Hey Everyone,
Last year was my first year and this year I’m looking forward to the event and recruiting people from work. I’d like to get 10-15 of us and be able to pick a couple of peaks we can see each other from when the flags fly.
My idea for this year is to honor not only those that fell on sept 11th but those that are falling every day fighting for our freedom. I am going to choose a soldier that was killed in the fight for freedom and I’m going to honor the friends I have in harms way. I will search for a fallen soldier, someone forgotten from a few years ago and I will contact that family to let them know we haven’t forgotten. When I fly the flag I will also have a photo of myslf with a photo of the hero I honor. Anyone is free to join me in this quest.
