in reply to: 2004 Flags on the 48 Has Arrived! #49590
Excellent! :flag:
in reply to: Member Rankings #49447Yikes – I already am!
in reply to: Member Rankings #49446If I get to “half-mast” I’ll start posting like crazy until I get to the next level. The punster in me doesn’t like the idea of being considered “half-mast.”
in reply to: Still need confirmation (2003) #49157Regretfully, I didn’t make it to North Twin. As I mentioned on the Solo thread – I was sick had some flu and fever. It gradually turned into bronchitis. I wish I’d started the antibiotics earlier.
I’m enjoying the trip reports and am glad so many people went and had a great time – although I’m also bumming that I wasn’t part of it and that another peak was uncovered because of that. I really liked being part of thew Flags event last year, and wish I could be adding to the trip reports posted here. Hopefully I’ll get another shot at it next year.
Many thanks to all who did go, and to the8r, Greg and the others who worked on organizing it. It’s wonderful that the losses of 9/11/01 have been commemorated in this way.
in reply to: Anybody going solo? #48998Sorry I missed ya Greg. The flu and whatever else is not going well, I’m coughing up a storm. Thanks for asking. I’m wishing I was up there, and hoping everyone is having a good time, and remembering how great it felt to be out there and a part of this last year. I imagine you’ve been thinking some of the same things.
I was really glad to read that Abby is doing better. You sound like a great Dad.
in reply to: Anybody going solo? #48996I did it solo last year (North Hancock), and – if this nasty flu is better Saturday morning than it was this morning – will do North Twin Solo this year.
in reply to: 12 more peaks to cover (2003) #48967Greg: I remember what it was like to have a sick baby – its easier to be sick yourself. I hope she’s better soon. Somehow its harder when your child can’t talk to you about what (s)he’s feeling and probably can’t understand.
in reply to: 12 more peaks to cover (2003) #48964I’m iffy for North Twin. I’m home with flu and fever today. Since there are lots of uncovered peaks, I won’t even consider trying to gret someone to back me up. There’s a good chance I’ll make it.
I loved being up on North Hancock with the flag last year and am really hoping I’ll be up in the Whites with a flag this time around.
On other related notes:
Maybe some of the groups who are covering peaks would be willing to split up to cover more peaks.
I posted an anouncement a few days back on backpacker.com and thebackpacker.com – maybe I’ll try again.
in reply to: Flags Web Site #48819I think the history statement is great! I have one tiny suggestion. Instead of “3000+” innocent people who died – I’d put “thousands of” for several reasons:
1) “Thousands” is what we knew at the time.
2) “Thousands” reads better – and carries more power.
3) 3000+ isn’t really any more exact.in reply to: Flags on the 48 – 2003??? #48806Cal thanks for the thoughful response.
IMHO – it makes perfect sense for us to do some additional dedication for our individual hikes (as long as it doesn’t contradict the purpose of the whole project). I’ll be thinking of the people who are serving in the military when I’m hiking, especially those in harms way.
I’ve been following Sgt. Rock’s experience in Iraq . I posted a link to his letters from the front in the miscellaneous section of this site.in reply to: Flags on the 48 – 2003??? #48804I agree with Cal about the suitability of last year’s statement for 2002 and the value of rethinking it for 2003. I’m not sure what it would mean to also honor veterans in this event. Veterans, as well as those in service now, deserve to be honored and respected – yet adding them to this mission changes the tenor of the event. There are, of course, other ways we could expland the mission: we could honor victims of terrorism everywhere, or we could honor all noncombatants killed in political and religious violence. These are worthy missions, but my gut reaction is to stick closer to theme of the first event. I am interested in hearing more about what other people, including Cal, think.
I think its also important that this event be neither pro or anti-war. We could honor veterans without going pro- or anti- war (and the same for honoring noncombatants or victims of terrorism), but it might require some care and thought to strike a suitable balance.
in reply to: Flags on the 48 – 2003??? #48801I will definitely help promote the event on some websites.
If people who sign up list the town they are in, that could help promote the event to local papers (for example, we coould tell the Concord Monitor that 2 groups from Concord were going, and 5 peaks were being covered by people from neighboring towns).
in reply to: Reports from the 48 Flagsites! #48760As an amusing aside: I tried to do my bit in publicizing the Flags event by posting links on a few discussion boards. One of these was backpacker.com – I just checked out that thread to make a follow-up post and noticed that the name of the mountain I chose to hike was censored. Is that ironic or what?!?!

in reply to: Reports from the 48 Flagsites! #48732It was a great day! My sons bailed on me, so it was just my dog and I. The temperatures were just about perfect for the hike up and for a couple hours on the summit. I ended up making better time than expected so I wandered up Cedar Brook trail past the Hancock loop for a while before heading up to the summit. The only flags that I could really see were South Hancock and Carrigan (with a little strain, but without binoculars).
I had planned to duct tape my hiking sticks together and then attach them to one of the dead trees at the summit, but this wasn’t possible to do with having the flag flap against nearby trees. With help from one of many great people who hiked the loop that day, I found a good piece of wood on the ground and used that to extend the height of my makeshift flag pole. The response from other hikers that day was wonderful. Many thanked me for being there.
After the hike, it was great to meet a variety of fine folk at the Woodstock Inn.
Thanks again to all who planned, organized and participated! It was a honor and a pleasure to be entrusted with one of the 48.
As a footnote: I was quite careful about the LNT and even made sure to pack out the trash I found at the summit and some of the other trash I noticed along the way.
in reply to: Good luck everyone! #48721Very well said Frodo!
This is a very fine thing y’all have put together, and I think its pretty kewl that I get to be a part of it by hanging out with the flag on one of the 48.
