Thanks guys for the feed back.

Frodo it was nice meeting you and your daughter. She was at the bar with her milk and french fries. She looked very cute in her Red Sox visor. We had a nice conversation about her hike to Madsion hut and her experience with the flag…we did touch upon one problem that should be addressed next year…we need to keep everyone posted on the Red Sox scores. Nobody knew because everyone was in some remote campsite or hut without NESN. 😆

BAM! You nailed that one on the head. I couldn’t agree more. I belong to the New Haven Bird Club. This club has outings run by volunteers at least twice a month. We have regular meetings once a month at a beautiful facility. A website and a news letter. The price of membership is $15.00, yet nonmembers are encouraged to participate.

The FOT48 volunteers have worked behind the scenes at there own expense. They are webed feet of the swan, nobody sees how hard they work, they just see a beatiful white bird gracefully glide across the water.

FOT48 could be run like a museum…suggested dontation. This could keep it opened as it is. People can ante up for a good cause. There would be funds to maintain the site and to use for deposits for the after hike event.

I already posted a reply to Pedxing under another thread. The staff seemed a bit over whelmed. I think the food was fine, the beer was cold, the atmosphere…well it smelled like hikers
perhaps they could have had extra staff.

Yea, they seemed overwhelmed. I spoke with Sherpa that night. He told me he was in Mooseland the night before and spoke with a waitress, she had no idea they were having this event.

For next year I would like to help with the planning of the post hike event. I was in the restaurant/hotel business for years. (Iwas at the Woodstock inn during thier first year.)

in reply to: West Bond #50124

Friday night I hit the trail at 5. It was foggy misty and windy. I made good time past Zealand hut and over Mt Zealand. I didn’t stop for views because I have seen fog before. I needed my headlamp by the time I was passing the peak spur trail for Zealand. Mt Guyot was windy and the visibility was poor. I am happy for the trail maintenance efforts; the cairns, blazes and lined trail. I got to The Guyot shelter a little after 9. and settled in. 30-45 min later the couple doing Mt Bond came through and took a platform just above the shelter.

In the morning I had enough time to go sight seeing over Bond and to Bondcliff. I made it back in time to West bond to have my flag up by 12. Thanks to a couple who had come in from Lincoln Woods.

I had eight people come by. so I had a very solemn experience seeing the other flags and meditaing on the entire experience. I made it off the trail passing some people who knew that I was a flagbearer because of the PVC pipes. People were very supportive and appreciative.

It was great to have met everyone at Mooseland.

Thanks for the opportunity. Living memorial are always the best. I hope that we never become frozen in bronze or marble, that are grandchildren can carry on this custom.

                Interesting web site.
I looked at the historical flags as I have a miniture flag that I am flying beneath the American flag. This is a green flag with a blue field. In the field is a random constellation of 13 stars. This is the flag that Capt Stark led his army under during the battle of Bennington. I am flying it because This army was comprised of militia and regulars from New England. It was a dark moment. The biggest land invasion of the war was underway. The Americans were up against proffesional soldiers and mercenaries. At the end of the day the enemy was defeated as they were a few weeks later at Saratoga, the turning point of the war. This flag to me shows what Americans can in the darkest hour when we are united.

Incidently the flag known as the Bennington flag (it has the 76 in the field” was made after the battle and brought into the public eye for the centenial. The plack at the Bennington museum explains this. http://www.virtualvermont.com/history/benflag.html

Good luck to everyone… can’t way to meet you Sat night.

That is a good list of media. Did you think of the Caledonia Record in St Johsbury? They cover alot of news in the Littleton area.

My itinerary is up in the air. I want to get to Zealand road as soon as my work schedule and traffic permits (I am driving up from CT). I will be doing great if it is 6:00 pm I would like to get onto the Twinway so that I have four to five miles under my belt before I sleep. If I am up and out early enough I would like to bag Bond.

So I will reconsider my route. My problem is I am coming up from CT that afternoon and wont be able to get on the trail until 6. I was planning on some night hiking until I could put some miles behind me and then find a good site 200′ of the trail.

Thanks for the response and the assurances.
My only Pemi experiences was a trip up Owl’s Head, Hence my feeling of solitude and remotness.

I am not concerned for my safety as I always prepare myself. I was trying to put a system in place to ease my spouse’s fears. However, hearing that the Bonds and the Pemi will be busy I am not going to worry about it.

I am really looking forward to this event!

I am trying to calm my new bride’s fears as I am hiking solo. I am trying to set up check points with one or two other hikers. If I miss one they could make a call to her saying I wasn’t there. I thought check points could be a sighting of my flag on the peak, a rendez vous point etc.

                                  Thanks Michael

A rendez vous is just one idea. Another would be if someone did not see a flag on a expected peak they could make a call. Or if there was lightning that forces us off the peaks I would then be involved in a bushwacl toward 13 falls. I would be delayed by a few hours and someone could make the call on my behalf.
There could be a number of ways we could look out for each other.
