It was the flag that laid atop her fathers coffin at his funeral (he was a serviceman in case you did not guess.) Now, apparently the tradition is that these flags are not to be flown ever again.
Not to worry – The flag code does not prohibit flying these flags.
From the definitive source:
http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.htmlIs it okay to fly a flag that was used to drape a coffin?
The flag code makes no reference to this use. There is a difference of opinion. Some feel that once folded, it should remain so forever. Other experts feel that it would be an honor to display the flag again to show patriotism. This is also discussed in detail here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080517120046AAXNxw6
I flew my dad’s flag from atop Mt. Flume back in 2003 for fot48.

Apparently, you were not on Franconia Ridge or at Owl’s Head last year.
TimActually, that was the only year that I missed the event.
in reply to: Still looking for pictures… #50497I was just a spectator this time around, but I took some photos of the flag on Cannon. I could create an album for this peak if the people who covered it can’t be reached.
:flag:in reply to: Time to pay the piper #50400IMHO, advertising and fot48 would not be a good mix as it would change the character of the site (and the event by linkage). My recommendation is to add a “Donations” link on the home page. Traffic has probably already peaked for this year, so add this ASAP while people are still checking in on the 2004 event. Deposit the donations in an escrow account. I think you’ll find that this years costs will be covered in short order, as well as a good portion of next years costs.
:flag:in reply to: Owl’s Head #50200Great job, Owl’s Head team!
I met you all at the suspension bridge at Lincoln Woods (I was the guy you asked to take the group photo at the end of your journey).
I’m glad you made it out before sunset…
:flag:in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49128I was actually proposing that we only use 1 picture per month. Using more than 1 per month would (IMHO) end up looking too cluttered. However, if we did want to go the “multiple picture per month” route, it would be at no additional cost provided that we perform the photo editing (i.e. we would have to combine the 4 photos into a single .jpg file which we would submit for a particular month).
in reply to: Flags on the 48 Patches #49125I like the idea of the calendar. Although choosing only 12 would be tough, I think the final result would be better than displaying 4 per page. We could open up a forum vote where we first pick the 12 peaks (albums), followed by a second vote to pick a single photo for each of the selected peaks. The back cover could be a 6 x 8 mosaic containing a small photo for each peak.
Shutterfly.com charges 15.99 for a single custom calendar, and will send a quote for orders 50 or over.
in reply to: Photos are up! #49046I’ve just uploaded a short movie clip in the Mount Flume photo album. The clip shows the flag being buffeted by the strong afternoon winds. Check it out here:

Short description of rigging and pole system: A fault tolerant, reconfigurable, lightweight pole system. Possibly a bit over-engineered, but it was a fun project with my kids. The pole consisted of 6 sections of 4-foot schedule 40 1 1/4 inch grey bell style PVC. Standard config was 20 feet with 1 spare section. High wind config was 12 feet and doubled the width of the pole. I found that the bell fittings were so snug that the re-enforcement clamps were not needed. Pole used eye-bolts for flag and guy-line attachment. Flag rigged to pole using carabiners.
Any suggestion on improvements/changes for next year (optional): I suggest that we update the mission statement to include some of the text that appears in the press release. In particular, the last part of the following sentence:On September 13, 2003, we are continuing this memorial to unite the hiking community in a show of support to all of the families and communities who suffered tragic losses that day, and to all of the people who have died serving this great country to preserve our freedom.
