in reply to: Reminder: Take Pictures! #52987
Let’s see if we can get pictures from ALL 48 summits this year. We’ve never done that and I think it’s a reasonable goal.
in reply to: Monroe – 9/9/06 #52951Garrett’s friend Gary is outstanding on the clarinet. I’ve got a good movie of him playing the Star Spangled Banner. Many folks commented that you could hear him playing as they made their way up the Monroe Loop.
Your the best Michael, Thanks
in reply to: How did you learn of Flags on the 48? #52899I added it for you John. My bad.
I orginally read about the thread in the hiker journal two days after it happened. I wish I had known about it, but I had no internet access where I was staying.
Doh! my bad. I remember now. It just needs to made more visible now so blind guys like me can find it.
Sorry 🙄
I think it’s time to make the 2006 PDF so that people can get it printed up and laminated if they so choose. I’m wondering if we should have it under the “communicate” topic to the left.
Paging MichealJ :flag:
I just went Southbound on I-91 today and inspected the northbound traffic. At 1:30 pm it was moving nicely. There are two lanes open instead of the usual three. There is no breakdown lane going across the bridge over the Connecticut River. You might be alright but I don’t know how much work will progress between now and the day you drive up. Unfortunately, I’m leaving the area a week before and can’t give you a closer look than that. Get off Exit 4 of I-90 if you decide to go that route. Exit 6 is still Springfield but doesn’t gain you anything and may make things worse because there is consruction there too.
I-90 will dump you just beyond where some of the construction is going on. Is it worth going 30 miles out of your way? It might be. What time would you expect to be traveling through the Springfield area. I’d avoid it if it was the rush hour time but you may be alright with minor delays at any other times. I-90 is a nice highway, I used it many times when I was in college.
in reply to: 2007 signups #52696Jaytrek is correct, We handled every request as a case by case basis. Someone on the steering committee made this defining comment: “You can never please everybody.”. This is so very true. I think we’ve got a great group of people on the committee that want this event to stay in it’s grassroots mold. Each request was posted for debate and debate we did. Some were no-brainers, some we had a good logic debate over. All in all, I think that we, as a steering committe, need to come up with guidelines for requests. Requests like Ken’s are something that are unique in nature and we should be ready to act upon them within a reasonable timeframe. For me, I think the goal we should be aiming for is participation and keeping it a memorial.
Thanks for your question Ken!
Ken, just to give you a heads up since I live in Springfield, There is more construction going on at the RT 91 / RT 391 split. There have been some serious backups lately.
I take the same route as you from here. Going by route 25 and Warren is such a time saver. Just keep a Heads up for moose.
in reply to: Awesome….Thank You! #52876Welcome z-man,
Chris is correct, we try to stay as grassroots as possible, and try to keep the event a memorial and not a publicity stunt. There are some really good people who take the time to participate in this event and they all have their reasons for doing so. Many people have talked to me at the summit and said “thanks for doing this”. It’s actually a great feeling to look out to a neighboring peak and be able to spot a flag. Many folks stop and tell you what they were doing that day. You are correct, we must never forget because we were all touched in some way by it.
Feel free to ask us whatever questions you need to so we can help you out.
