in reply to: 2006 Post Event Gathering Thoughts #52183
With the event being a Saturday this year, I think people may hang out for the weekend and not return home until Sunday if can make the post-gathering appealing enough for them to go to. Granted I know some folks will not camp and others will want a sit down resteraunt type meal. I have a goofy vision but here goes.
A Post hike gathering at the KOA. We get several grills and cook up hamburgs and hotdogs for everyone. Volunteers who can’t hike can help out here. It would be bring your on beverages but we could snag a couple cases of soda to dispense but your on your own for beer. Get the ID tags that MichealJ had a few years ago so everyone knows everyone. Have a map of the Whites on a board with colored push-pins identifing the peaks where flags were seen. Some folks can put up their flags displays. Make it a festival type gathering. Before MtnMagic starts the campfire we gather-round for a small prayer for the victims.
Just an idea
in reply to: 2006 Post Event Gathering Thoughts #52180This is something that I’ve thought about a little. Jaytrek brings up some very good points about the KOA. What I think we need to do though, if we go in that direction, is speak to the campground directly while at the planning meeting about doing this. After Labor Day, the campgrounds will not be as crowded and they might really welcome the extra business. Perhaps we will create a committee at the meeting to facilitate this. I don’t plan on putting the main focus of the meeting on this. The Event itself is the main dish. But I do think that it’s a great idea to have a FLAGS gathering-type weekend with the focus being the event itself. Does that make sense?
in reply to: 2006 Planning Weekend/Gathering #52000Thanks for doing this Jaytrek!
I think that the island worked great for everyone last year. Bathrooms and showers are really close by along with a camp store to get things you might have forgotten. (I do know they do NOT carry tent poles) 😆 If I’m not mistaken there is a large tent behind the pool area. I don’t remember it being up during last years planning meeting but I remember it during the event weekend. If the weather looks lousy, I’ll bring a large tarp that I have. I have two large totes of kindling wood already cut to bring up for that weekend.
Thanks for the gaval. I’ll be banging it around 6:30 on Saturday. Cathie and I will be there on Friday night as well.in reply to: The original 6 hikers reunite on 5th anniversary? #52201I spoke to Frodo about this last year. He would be the one to ask for the names. I know that Gail L. participated in the first two events. She was part of Frodo’s group. I wonder too, if that group knew what would become of that one hike.
Also whatever happened to RJ? He was a part of the very first steering committee and we never heard from him after the first event.
One thing that would be really special is if we could get our hands on that orginal Flag that flew on Liberty. I’d like to see that Flag make it to the event each year. Frodo told me that that particular flag was someone’s in the orginal group and Frodo’s poles that he uses today are from the orginal group.
I would suggest a post on the AMC Journal where this all began.
in reply to: 2006 Planning Weekend/Gathering #51995Sorry to hear you can’t make it Bill. Your input will be missed. I KNOW you’ll be there for the event with an impressive display as always.
I don’t think we’ll need to reschedule. Most people have already penciled this on their calanders and some would have a hard time switching. I don’t think there will be much conflict with SherpaJohn’s group at all. I feel quite the opposite. Having some new blood rotate into the meeting every year is good for the event. I have great promise for the planning meeting.
in reply to: Sign Ups 2006 #52172Thanks Smitty,
The on-call status of some hikers is one of the topics I was hoping to discuss at this years meeting. It’s important to have some backups in case a family emergency or something of that nature happens to befall someone or group. We were really lucky last year and some great people came through at the last minute to cover South Carter and Whiteface. If these people did not cover those particular peaks, we did have hikers on other peaks that volunteered to split their group up to get all the peaks covered.
A lot of it comes down to communication. If we can get the information on a cancelation ASAP, then we can get the word out to the various internet boards that a peak is open. If it’s last minute, I believe we’ll have groups that will volunteer to split up. Great suggestion on your idea!!! Perhaps this is something we can put on the signup page.
Cannon, Washington and Wildcat D will be reserved for non-hikers as usual. This is another thing to discuss at the meeting but I’m not too worried about it. What I’d really like to see is a veterans group take a flag up on of these peaks.
in reply to: Sign Ups 2006 #52170We have discussed this before, especially at last years planning meeting. Giving preference to existing members is not what the event is about. We’d like for ALL members of the hiking commmunity to have a chance to participate and get whichever peak they wish. As of right now, the only people that are allowed to pre-register are large youth groups. Granted this all could change at the planning meeting. There is some tweaking of the sign-in system that needs to be done, Don’t get me wrong, it’s not foolproof yet.
Thanks for your input!in reply to: 2006 Post Event Gathering Thoughts #52177Please remember too that the Event has moved back to a Saturday this year. The KOA campground is an option as well.
in reply to: 2006 Planning Weekend/Gathering #51991Hello again Miles!
If your talking about the Planning meeting hike, it’s May 20th, and it’s up in the air what everyone is doing.
Flags on the 48 2006 is on September 9th 2006. Hope you and your group can make it again.
in reply to: 2006 Planning Weekend/Gathering #51989Weekend before is Mother’s day, Lots of people would miss that.
Weekend after is a little thing called Memorial Day weekend.
Such a shame you can make it 😥 . We’ll make sure to nominate you for some oddball tasks.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill destroyed by fire #52064no stage needed 😆 …..Just a sturdy milkcrate.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill destroyed by fire #52062Well, first things first at the Planning Meeting. The Event itself and the planning for it comes first. The After-gathering is not at the top of the agenda, granted I can understand why this is important to some. (Any new news on the Mooseland Fire, Will they rebuild?)
There are some things that need to be tweaked. Last years meeting was great because we got a wide range of views from people and got volunteers for different tasks. I hope it goes just as well this year.
No gavel this year, but I do need something more solid to stand on. 😆
in reply to: Mooseland Grill destroyed by fire #52058We’ll have to see where this goes. Best advice would be to bring your suggestions to the Planning meeting or give the suggestion to someone that is. One thing to remember if we were to go with the KOA route, it would be wise to ask the owner of the campground if they could spare a couple minutes of their time to come to the planning meeting and see if they would have any issues with what could be a large crowd showing up at all different times and such. That time of the year is still prime camping time and I would hope that we don’t ruin a good thing by not being on the same page as them.
I do like the idea of a cookout type gathering. Once my internet connection is more solid, I’ll follow up on another idea that may work out.
in reply to: Mooseland Grill destroyed by fire #52047Met a lot of really cool people at the Mooseland over the years. It’s a shame because it’s a favorite among many hiking circles not just FOT48. We’ll have to come up with something different this year. I doubt they could rebuild it that fast. 🙁
