in reply to: Highland Center update??? #50672
For the folks that arrived early, the Mooseland worked out. But as the crowd grew, the staff became overwhelmed and many folks had to wait over an hour for food. Some could not be seated and just left.
in reply to: Zealand Mountain #51162Arriving late on Saturday however you may not get a spot in the shelter. A very good idea to bring a tent. Shelter holds about 12 persons and there are about six tent platforms. There are overflow tentsites up on the ridge but I believe you need to check with the caretaker first before you camp there. Guyot Shelter to Zealand Mt. is a nice hike. Guyot peak itself is a gem but the col between Guyot and Zealand I remember to be fairly steep on both sides. Do you still need a Zealand Road update?
in reply to: Zealand Mountain #51158What Micheal said! Guyot is a great place to stay. Ethan pond is the really long way to Zealand but his reccomendation for staying at Ethan Pond is sweet. Pucknuts, I believe is staying at Galehead hut. That’s always an option as well. I’ll fire you an e-mail on Thursday though to let you know where you stand roadwise.
The patches go way back, If I am not mistaken, 2003 was the year of the patch. Frodo was the brains behind the patches. It’s the only patch I ever put on my backpack and a treasured item that will go from pack to pack. Frodo would be the person to contact for the design pattern.
in reply to: Where to purchase flags #51136Many Home Depots and Walmarts have some nice flags but you may need to go to a special store to get a BIG flag. You could try :
http://www.united-states-flag.com
I noticed some of the POW/MIA flags on that site as well. As for flagpoles, check out the gallery for a whole host of ideas for displays. [/url]
in reply to: Status: Week 1 #51101We touched on this during the planning meeting. I, at one time, thought it would be logical to expand to other peaks. I’ve since changed my mind.
The original concept was 48 mountains being covered. We struggled for a couple years to finally cover all 48. Now we have large groups heading up to the peaks and a very good internet buzz going on about the event. Why kill that? Remember, it’s a memorial that we are doing, not a game nor a publicity stunt.
Do I have a problem with mountains outside the 48 being covered? Absolutely NOT. We’ve had photo’s from Mt. Marcy posted on the site. But for the event proper, I believe if we start expanding, we slowly lose the true meaning of what this event is all about.
I think a more reasonable goal of the event is to have 48 pictures of Old Glory on different peaks for the event.
in reply to: August 11: Camping Out #51106I’ll be there along with Grace. I’ll bring my boom box so MichealJ can listen to Billy Joel first thing in the morning 😆 😆 😆
in reply to: Status: Week 1 #51096In less than one week! OUTSTANDING!!!!!!
We do have some nibbles for the reserved peaks.
Thanks for Journeyman for grabbing the last peak!!!
Just think, the first year of the event we struggled all summer long to get close to full coverage. Now we can get almost 3/4 done in just one day. It’s come a long way!!!in reply to: Wow, 3/4 of the way already #51046Perhaps we should let this contact know where the other scout troops are staying in case they would like to swap information and ideas.
Thanks for the gesture Puck!!! But realize that we have some 50 plus days until the event. With the amount of publicity that is out there, I’m sure they will be accounted for. The people that take those last couple peaks are the true heroes of this event. I think we should let the person who signs up for the last peak, get the first choice the year after. Watch those CTtrampers! They always have an awesome display!in reply to: Referring Websites #51069bobandgeri also posted on the AMC boards for the event. It would be kinda foolish if we did not advertise there. It’s where this all orginally started.
I guess my post on Backpacker worked. Where’s Alpinezone???? That was our first home!in reply to: Wow, 3/4 of the way already #5103737 out of 45! We are now getting to the usual suspects for peaks. Surprised North Kinsman is there. With those ledges facing the Franconias, I thought it would be gone. I thought Owl’s Head was going to go quick this year. I figured someone would have a crazy idea to get a flag through the tree’s there. The people that sign up for the last couple of peaks are the real heroes of this event. I’m also surprised we have no outing clubs or high schools groups this year. Any word on the fourth boy scout troop, Stephen???
in reply to: Status: Day 1 #51049153 hikers in one day! I don’t think we had that many for the whole event the first year. We sure have come a long way!
in reply to: Wow, 3/4 of the way already #51034I pinged both Madison and Chris who is leading the Hale group about the satus of the bridge. Madison had to deal with the same thing last year but they never ended up doing the work. I’ll drive by there Thursday morning (the 8th) and double check the status of the bridge and let them know.
Quite a few ridgerunners this year. Perhaps we should make a separate list for that. Add that to the lists of things to discuss at next year’s meeting.
MichealJ, if you get Owl’s Head, I’ll go with you, I’ve got a more than able crew on Moosilauke to pick up the slack. Actually we are available on an on-call basis as well.in reply to: Wow, 3/4 of the way already #5102630 peaks out of 45. Not too bad at all. Lots of familar people and many new people as well. Don’t worry we still have about 60 days left…. 🙄
