in reply to: Where do we go this year? #49519
I vote for either Moat Mountain or the Woodstock Inn. Nothing beats freshly brewed beer!!!
in reply to: Signups: 31%!!! (2003) #48837Hi Guys: I carried a flag up E. Osceola last year and I’m really bummed I won’t be able to participate this year. I’ve got another commitment I can’t get out of. If things should change I’ll definitely be in. Keep me in mind for next year. Rain or shine I’ll be there!
in reply to: Reports from the 48 Flagsites! #48730My group and I made it to East Osceola a few minutes past noon. Our flag was flying (actually hanging between 2 trees) proudly until 2:00.
Before the hike up and over Osceola we met up with Brian C and his buddy who were carrying the flag up to Osceola. We scanned other nearby peaks (Tripyramid, Carrigan, etc) with binoculars, but It turned out that theirs was the only other flag we could see from the east peak.
While on East Osceola we met several hikers who knew about the event and wanted their picture with our flag. Other hikers were surprised by what they saw and thought what we were doing was a good thing.
After the hike we had dinner at the Woodstock Inn, but left shortly after for the long drive home. Sorry I missed all the other hikers that may have been there.
If this event will be held again next year you can count me in!
in reply to: celebrating after flags on the 48 ? #48672Mari – I’ll be doing East Osceola with my wife and just may join you at the Woodstock Inn afterwards. I don’t know what I’ll be wearing, but I’ll have a beer or two in my hands.
Hope to see you and other flag carriers there.
in reply to: Flag Pole Ideas #48642I have not bought my flag yet, but was thinking of flying it from my hiking staff. This way I won’t have to carry all sorts of extra poles, ropes, etc. However, I need to see how the flag is constructed before I can figure out if this method will work.
I’ve selected East Osceola so I’ll probably be able to use the trees on the summit.
in reply to: Who supplies the flags? #48612I think I found your flags. Scroll a little more than half way down the page.
in reply to: Do it on July 4th #48632Hiking on July 4th (or the weekend of the 4th) is a good suggestion BillyGoat, however many people may already have plans and will not be available. Maybe in years to come, if the event is successful, the date could be switched to the 4th to commemerate not only 9/11 but the American spirit as well.
in reply to: Enthusiasm #48618I agree with Alpinista. When the date is closer there will be many news stories and rememberance events going on all over the country. If you could publicize this forum some more I’m sure you would have a larger response.
Last Septemeber, when this event was suggested on the AMC forum I volunteered to carry a flag up a mountain. I’m still very interested in participating.
