Chip,
I have done the FOT-48 now for 2 years – Wildcat D and then Moriah. Check my flagpole comments in the forum topic for flags & poles – metal conduit 20-footer not as heavy as you might think. All packs in a backpack and does well with a 6×10 flag. Check the pics of Moriah from last year on this website. Last year we bought some parachute cord at EMS that worked very well, not bulky but good and strong. Let me know if you want some good pics of the rigging etc. I will be glad to share.

P.S. 6×10 flag was only about $50.

With the event being a Saturday this year, I think people may hang out for the weekend and not return home until Sunday if can make the post-gathering appealing enough for them to go to. Granted I know some folks will not camp and others will want a sit down resteraunt type meal. I have a goofy vision but here goes.
Just an idea
For those wanting the sit-down dining with choices, I have been to Truant’s Tavern right at the main intersection of North Woodstock – good burgers and fries as well as salads etc.

Chip’s comments about parking lead me to wonder if parking will be an issue from Crawford Notch, since there are a lot of peaks in that area.
???
Mt Clinton Road parking lot just across from the Highland Center has many spaces, and remember we are after Labor Day. Otherwise, down toward the Depot there are many parking spaces next to 302.
Yes, we will also be needing some yards of rope. In a stiff wind, more bracing is needed. I look forward to the potential of getting up Flume Slide since Dirt had told me his tale so many times. Our team on Moriah last year did an excellent job and this year Flume should give us great views on that sunny day that Dirt promises! Whatever the route, it’s always a light-hearted trip with a great group!
:flag: 😛in reply to: Flags Sign-ups Day 1 #52423Hi ALL – The signup went well for us (Dirt & Trekman) but when I read auto-responses, I am not sure what it is that means. Is Dirt supposed to get an e-mail confirming his PC status?
Looking forward to another great experience this year on Flume.
-TrekManin reply to: 2006 Post Event Gathering Thoughts #52190I think that expecting all to go to one place is too much. Some will be there quaffing by 4:00 and others will not be able to until after 6:00. That’s what happened to us last year at Mooseland after Moriah. I wanted a cold beer and could not get served for 20+ minutes. Then we left for Bethlehem to eat and head for home (CT).
I think that a couple of places noted should be designated and let geography prevail. I love getting together with other FOT48ers to trade stories, but in comfort and good time.
:beer:in reply to: Mooseland Grill destroyed by fire #52051Magic – As long as many of the “shoulders” belong to wait staff, it could work. We bombed out of Mooseland minutes after we got there because of the twenty minute wait for a cold beer! Ended up eating in Bethlehem on our way to the highway.
:beer:in reply to: Photos needed: 3 #51801So, right now we have 4 peaks without pictures, but two of them have confirmed attendance with the flag. Have I got this right? Do we have a way to contact the PCs that took the Wildcats? Last year we were able to confirm all peaks covered on the 15th of September.
:flag:in reply to: Post Event Location Suggestion #51732I vote for a good solid place that is prepared for the numbers that we will bring. The Moose has been a disappointment both years I have done this. 20 minutes to get a beer in the back room is not excusable when someone supposedly had the place prepped to have a larger than average crowd – then they have only one person in the back?? HUH!!??
I have really enjoyed the face-to-trailname association that you get in the social atmosphere of the post-event – great to get to talk to the posters on the bulletin board in person.

:flag:in reply to: Summit Journals #51785Dirt bought a nice hard cover journal book for us to have at Wildcat-D last year. We used it again this year on Moriah and labeled the next new page with date and peak name. I think this works for those of us who will do this for years to come. The logistics of having a separate journal for each peak and trading journals around every year is, let’s face it, the impossible task.
I vote for keeping our own journals and if someone one day bombs out of the group, maybe he/she will be good enough to pass it along to someone else.
:flag:If you look here, it shows Moriah from Madison.

SherpaK said he spotted our flag from Adams since he was looking down and had a green background instead of a bright sky to deal with.in reply to: A-10 flyby #51707@annualhiker wrote:

Cooooollll vid Sarah …. thanks!
:flag:in reply to: Washington #51775ml,
I think Monroe is the one you are trying to think of behind Lakes. Did you see us on Moriah to the north and just east?
Be well ….
I am surprised that you did not see our flag on Moriah. We had a 6′ x 10′ on a 20-foot pole and the wind kept it going for most of the time. We did see your flag with the field glasses. SherpaKroto said he saw us easily from Adams as the background was green. I am guessing the “pole” you think you saw on Wildcat (D right?) was actually the radio tower next to the observation deck. Dirt and I did that peak last year.
