The Moriah Team has a plan to be at Stoney Brook Trailhead at 0700 to start out. With almost 3500 vertical, we want some breathing room. We will have a car planted at the end of Carter Moriah on Bangor Road where we hope to arrive by about 5:00 p.m. We are staying at Dolly Copp, campsite #77 if anyone is around and wants to stop by. Looks like great weather is on the horizon – be well all! :flag:
in reply to: Flag Pole Ideas #48651My pole last year worked out great. See the post of 7 September 2004 above. I did not need stiffeners or duct tape at all. I used a simple loop of nylon cord strung through the grommets on the flag, knotted and then attached to the pole via stainless hose clamps. The guy ropes tied to the couplings of the conduit, but another hose clamp would do this well and save weight. My pole is 20 feet and weighs in at 18 pounds – but it is strong as it is (see Wildcat-D pics from 2004). We will fly a new 6×10 flag this year at Moriah with this veteran pole.
:flag:in reply to: Officially "Unofficial" Post Trip Libations #51347The more I think about it, the more I think folks might make it to this place. Depending on trails used to “come out” (and if you come out at all on Sunday after the flag raising), anyone coming to Pinkham Notch or Crawford Notch areas could make it pretty quickly to Red Parka. This could take in Jackson, Eisenhower, Willey, Tom, Field, Carters, Wildcats, Moriah … maybe even Madison, Washington, Monroe. Sure I am missing some. The beer is good in pint canning jars and the atmosphere casual. Even outside dining if weather is nice. For those unfamiliar – Red Parka is on Rte 302 just before the intersection with Rte 16 in Glen.
:beer:in reply to: Post Event #51440Hiker,
Go to the thread titled “2005 Post Event Gathering” and you will see the discussion that has ensued about Mooseland etc. Basic answer – no one event is planned and you should try to find unofficial groups at campsites etc. We may well go to Red Parka Pub after Moriah.

in reply to: Where to purchase flags #51141The flag I received (see above post) looks excellent – light for flying in small breezes and sturdy. Weight is about 3-4 pounds for a 6×10.
in reply to: Officially "Unofficial" Post Trip Libations #51342While I do not speak for all of Team Moriah, we are mostly staying at Dolly Copp with some staying Sunday night and some headed home (CT). I might suggest the Red Parka Pub (Rtes 302 & 16) as we start on the way home which could be good for others in the Carter-Moriah Range and/or Washington (if Tuck’s is used).
:beer:in reply to: Where to purchase flags #51140I looked at several websites and this one seems to have the best prices.
http://www.united-states-flag.comI just ordered a 6×10 nylon for $44.00 and it came to only $50 and change with shipping.
Hope it is big enough for someone to see on Moriah this year (we had a 5×8 on Wildcat-D last year).

I read along the various peak talk that there would be no rush to get down as the post-event gathering was not to happen. True!?!? What happened and/or are some gathering in their own neck of the woods to trade peak stories and quaff brews? I am in favor of the craft brews somewhere and maybe I will have to make a batch of my own to share!
Part of it is the social part! :beer:in reply to: Add Other Hikers #51001My kudos also passed on to Stephen and others who have made this sign-up so easy. Good work!
in reply to: Flag Upgrades #49548I plan to get a new flag. Last year’s borrowed 5×8′ was just not enough I figure. We were at Wildcat D and it was immediately apparent that bigger is better. Hard to see others from there even with the field glasses. I will get a 6×10′ this year and have found some good choices here:
http://www.united-states-flag.com/index.htmlWe found the 20-foot pole of conduit and couplings to work well, and strong but not that heavy. I carried the pole and Dirt had the food and tools and rope. Neither of us carried more that 30 or so pounds. I’ll be glad to share the pole design with anyone who would like it.
in reply to: Proposed press release #50892I think that sounds great Alpinista! :flag:
in reply to: Proposed press release #50889Hi All – Good to see the enthusiasm for the hike gaining momentum. I am no writer (engineer) but I had a problem with the following sentence:
“It was first an informal and spontaneous memorial on the first Saturday after the attacks by a group of six hikers moved by the horrific and lasting toll of the attacks…”
Sounded like 6 hikers attacked. Maybe we can switch around some of the phrases?
Thanks for the work and energy ….

in reply to: Sunday, September 11, 2005 #50619I agree with the logic of date picking – Sunday will work for me. Saturday is the obvious choice for a week-day 11th too. Thanks for all the front work from you guys.
If Dirt will have me as a partner again, I am ready for another year. Wildcat was great last year!
